What would it take to apply an 84-89 induction system on a 79 SC? I can get the actual intake, injectors, and throttle body. What else do I need other than the DME brains? Would this provide better performance over the CIS system and could I run larger cams?

I've wondered if there wasn't someone out there that had done this. To me it looks like a bolt-on. The tuff part would be all the wiring. A simple mod for the O2 sensor would be needed. I've heard many people who have swapped in Carrera 3.2s speek of the difficulty doing the wiring.
One other thing you could do would be to use the Carrera intake, injectors, and throttle body. Ditch the DME and opt for a simpler system like the Haltech unit. This is basically what Mark Hargett has done with his supercharged application. I have also seen this done on a 930 3.3T motor as well. Much less involved (and less costly) than the DME system. Any of these variations would free you from the CIS choke hold. The pistons and cams could now both be changed, and you could add a turbo or supercharger later on! Besides the obvious(manifolds, injectors etc) in the engine compartment, you will also need a new flywheel with the DME teeth on it, you will then need to cut a notch in the trans bell housing to mount the DME sensor, and of course the wiring harness to connect the DME computer under the drivers seat to the fly wheel sensor and the engine wiring. The engine temperature sensor also needs to be changed. It is all very doable but the benefits are marginal. Why not swap in a 3.2 if that's what you want? At least that way you get a good bang for your bucks.

also, the 3.2 heads have a 1/2" shorter head, at the intake.

This is why using a Haltech or some other engine management system with the Carrera intake would be easier to do. You can keep the disributor and eliminate a lot of wiring headaches. Mark has informed me that a fuel-only control system is less than a grand. I would think that keeking complexity and cost down for this type of swap would be a MUST. If not the returns surely wouldn't be worth the hassle.
