Did Porsche ever make a 912 rally car
I just looked at a 66` 912 thats buried with 100+ lawnmovers surrounding it. The owner says its an original rally car with 150hp. I looked at the engine and it is a normal looking 912 engine but has a much larger crank pulley and the super rare sand cast solex carbs. The suspension is standard issue as is the brakes. Steel wheels . The speedo was different however. It was either 150mph or 180mph(forgot) .
I can buy the car for $2k but its in very sad shape. I know the carbs alone go for around $2500 so its a wash on that alone. Im just not convinced anything else on this heap is worth digging out. Anyone ever hear of such an animal ? Kurt Williams

Look at www.912registry.org. Not much 912 traffic here. I've asked some questions about building a 912 race car in the technical section and gotten no responses. I've had some luck posting similar questions in the autox and racing forum.

Probably worth buying for any 912 for $2,000 if its got the engine in it. Probably has fancy cams or something in there.

In 1967 a Porsche 912 won the European Rally Championship for touring cars. Maybe that's the car :-) Any other signs of rally prep like holes in the dash for stop watches or a dead pedal?

Sounds like the parts are worth more than the $2,000 if you want to do the work to part out the car. Worst case, you get it home and figure out it's a rare/special car.
After doing a bit of homework I'm finding the 912 motors and related parts are harder to come by than the 911 stuff. Still not as expensive but fewer of them survived.

I don't think this was a 'true' factory entry but S. Zasada did win the GP of Argentina in a 911 in 1967. He also ran a 912 in the European Rally Championship in the same year.

There was a beautiful "912R" featured in April Excellence of either '03 or '04. Pics done on the west coast. The model never existed, but this vintage racer guy did it right.
It's in my files of "great period mods"

Did the owner offer any proof of rally history that can be verified? I am a member on a historical motorsport group and can often find someone that knows a bit of history given a drivers name.

Hey Dave, Its Kurt. We just emailed about the calipers an hour ago.
Guy's, As for the car I looked at it last year and the guy insisted it was a super rare rally car and was worth 10 times more than the asking price of $2k. I was just very busy and didnt go back there since telling him that I would let him know. I have no dought its still there. I only found out about it because a scrap metal guy told me where it was. The owner is a crazy old bastard that owns enough crap to fill a landfill. He owns about 30 acres here on Long Island (thats millions $$) I just didnt want to spend 10 hrs moving all the crap(mostly 30+ year old lawnmowers) out to access the car. I do recall it had a different speedo in it. I will likely go back there soon. I actually forgot about it till I came across my old post while doing a search. I recall him saying it has a roller crankshaft too. Who knows. I will certainly post the credentials here if I can still buy it. Kurt Williams
