Swepco 306 question
I got an 88 Carrera in SoCal. Nice weather now but gets pretty hot in the summer. I've got about 160k miles on it. What weight oil would be recommended? Seeing that Wayne sells it I'm assuming it has all the great ZDDP stuff.....

Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils
maybe this is the equivalent of using a howitzer to kill a mosquito but that thread has all the answers and makes a lot of sense

I have read that thread and didn't find any info specific to my local. I was hoping someone local could help out. Also, it's just a daily driver but with LA's freeways they are (more like parking lots), it's almost like driving on the track (heat that is).

I think you'd be fine with 15W40 (what I use) or 20W50.

The thread is easy to find for the Pelicanites that have been on here awhile. I meant they should make it a sticky and title it "Everything you wanted to know about motor oil" or something like that for all the new people that join the board.

There are a ton of relevant/important threads on here. We'd have 2 pages of stickies if they were all immortalized. Besides, that's half the fun here, wading thru all of the info.

I agree with you Netspeed . I'm in the s.f. area however my baby is more a garage queen.. Excellence May 2004 has an article by Jim Pasha on motor oil .He suggest using 15w-50 year round for 89-and -earlier 911s because of high heat- both ambiemt and engine.

I do searches sometimes and wind up going completely off the topic following the threads that pop up. I mean every single topic is still here from the beginning boggles the mind

I've spent some time on same roads. If I lived their permanenty I'd add another oil cooler under left fender. If I can't keep at least a very slow roll I'll keep the revs at 1,200 to at least stabilize the electrics, have "some" air flow over engine, and keep oil flowing to coolers. Mobil 1 15w50 is more than ok imo.

From what I've read, I'm sticking with dino-based oil. I know many have not had problems with leaks but I don't want to risk it.

I think I'd respectfully disagree there. From what I've read, Mobil 1 has been one of the bigger changes in formulation these last few years. Sure, Porsch may still recommend for new cars, but they are different animals.
There are too many boutique oils out there that will do better for our cars. I was going to run Brad Penn 20/50 for only my break-in, and then switch to full syn like Redline or RP, but I think I'm sticking with it. It's a semi-syn, which is what I've run for the last 6 yeats (different brand) and I was pretty impressed with how my engine looked when I took it apart for rebuild. Not that I'm trying to be cheap here, but it is also about 1/2 the price of Mobil 1.

I only said Mobil 1 is "more than ok imo". So you figure it's not ok? If I had to change from that I'd use Redline. The important part of the reply is the added front front oil cooler, especially with dino oil.

I've had my '84 in Texas heat with only the stock coolers at the track and on the street, and have never overheated or come close. I guess I'm just more sensitive to this whole deal having just done my rebuild, and knowing what I spent in time and money. It is not something I plan to do again on this car. That, or I guess I'm just argumentive today...
