Long tube OBX Headers
They look great. I'm getting a set.

Jeff,
If you bought these headers, could you post the outside and inside diameters of the primaries? These look like copies of the Bursch headers. Thanks Lyn |
FYI the QSC headers that JeremyD mentioned are 1-1/2" ID, 1-5/8" OD and are very similar to the OBX headers. I bought them from Jeremy.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241920592.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1241920611.jpg They're one-piece pipes instead of the joined pieces like the OBX headers shown. You can get them from TRE Motorsports http://www.tremotorsports.com/product.cfm?Node=1372 |
Can anyone confirm if the OBX headers (not the 3.0 RSR ones - but the pic on the first page) are - or are not - equal length? I have read plenty of threads and searched and I see a few comments that these look like copies of George's European Racing Headers, which are equal length, but looking at the pictures, I just can't see it. Hey, I am looking at a 3D product in 2D, so I could be wrong.
Thanks |
I have the shorty George's copies on my car with muffler extensions and M&K shorty mufflers. I'll measure the header primaries and let you know. I think I measured them before and they are not equal length. But I may be thinking of the QSC long tube headers I posted above, which I did not end up using.
BTW anybody considering buying the OBX shorty headers with the "ceramic" coating, spend the extra $75 and get the stainless. The ceramic coating is cheap ceramic-like paint that scratches off easily and burns off rather quickly. I should have known better and next time i'll get the stainless ones. All told they fit well and I like that you can use the original oil lines and therefore you are not required to do the oil line backdate. |
Thanks KTL, thats very kind of you. I have spent a lot of time staring at the various photos and scratching my head about this. In some shots, the OBX look like they might be equal length and in others, I just think "no way". At the price, still tempting though.
According to TRE's website the QSC headers are equal length and in stainless at $675 look a good deal. The collectors look rather average but the longer primary is probably a better bet for cars that are not blessed with full on race motors and have to stick with reasonable 6800rpm limits and non-stratospheric power bands. |
All this talk (spanning a year and a half) still has me wondering why everyone is so interested in buying Asian copies of George's headers rather than just buying the original. OK so stainless looks bling under there, but are we after bling or function? Get the European Racing headers and have them properly ceramic coated.
And all the Magnaflow custom fab talk too. Lots of work, fabbing, welding, buying tips etc. I ordered one of Ben's 911R M&K mufflers and it flows extremely well, is well built, light and just plain works. Sure it's more $$, but I didn't have to run all over town finding this bend, that muffler, custom tips, then trusting my 911 to a guy who builds duals for Mustangs and pay him $$$ to put it all together and hope it works. And FWIW- I tried the Magnaflow thing 15 years ago on a previous Carrera, with Bursch 1.625" headers and it ended up making less torque than the factory sport muffler I'd been running. Sure it made a few more hp at 6500, but the torque curve in the 4000-5500 range was down, and the resonance was horrible. Numbers were validated on the old Autothority dyno back when Al Collins was still around. I tried both at Summit Point back to back and the sport muffler just made more useable power where I needed it powering through a turn. Don't remember which Magnaflow but it was a 2-in, 2-out spec'd for a Buick Grand National GNX car. By the end of the day at the track, I'd given the convoluted Magnaflow setup to someone else who tried it and threw it in the trash when it didn't make as much power as his gutted custom 2-in, 2-out stock muffler. Sorry, just my $.02, and with our constantly rising Illinois taxes, even that's not worth much these days. |
I have wondered about this.
One one exhaust thread it was noted that a 3.2 seems to respond to some type of cross-over with increased torque weather a stock style muffler or a Flowmaster. |

If you get the street adapter pipes, then either George's or OBX can work with any muffler that fits SSIs - so there is a world of choice. I hear you re mufflers, I will just buy something that bolts on (if I go this route), but some people like to feel like they have made something and saved a buck in the process. Sometimes its about the journey not the destination ;) |
Richard,
I did exactly what you're thinking (OBX cheapo headers + muffler extensions) and it's not a bad way to go. However my extensions appear to need some elongating of the holes because I can't get my OEM banana muffler inlets to line up with the muffler extension pipes. I'll have to play with it a little more, since I was rushed when installing my exhaust. I didn't spend alot of time playing with the muffler and instead focused on the support bracket for the extensions and the fitment of the M&K shorty track mufflers. I'll take some pictures in the next few days. I did measure the length of the primaries on the LH side header. My method of measurement to lay a string along the path of the pipe. Pipe length (measured from weld on cyl. head mounting flange to the weld at the downstream end of the merging scalloped pipes) for cylinders #1 and #2 are within an inch of each other. However the pipe for cyl. #3 is MUCH shorter- at least 4 inches. I will post my measurements when I finish measuring the RH header for cyls. 4, 5, 6. |
I put on the OBX stainless headers when I finished my rebuild a few months ago. the outer quality was decent. The inner quality was not so great and they could have used some grinding and smoothing. I'll take care of that when I drop the motor for a re-paint some time in the next ... um... in future I guess.
I also have the header extensions and have two setups: M&K Shorties and a 2/2 sport muffler hack job. I have experienced the tough match up of the sport muffler onto the extensions, but a little coaxing and it fits up fair. I also have noticed that on 1 flange I have a very slight blow by trace on the head. I have since tightened the nut so we'll see if that fixes the issue. Seat of the pants dyno says power seems more peaky with the shorties than with the sport muffler. The stainless finish has deteriorated rapidly in the 5k miles driven since installation. I do not mind, but it certainly is not 'bling' anymore! Car runs cool as ice even in the Aug track events I have run here in FL. I did use some header wrap on my OIL line. I backdated the oil lines and it runs very close to one of the passenger side pipes so I wrapped the oil line for 4" with the idea it would prevent most of the heat transfer from pipe to oil line. Over all, I am very happy with my OBX headers. I chose them over Georges because of the cost. $300+ savings gets me 2 track days and that's real money for me. FYI: those M&K shorties rock! BUT they are insanely loud! I have gotten several compliments on their sound at the track... and gotten one angry motorist horn blower on the street ;) Best regards, Michael |

Beware of Chinese products, especially if they are unusually cheap or 'good value'. Recently I had a problem with a brand new Mercs OEM driveshaft damping rubber that caused marked vibration even at very low speed, making the car virtually undrivable. Turned out to be a fake part without indication of where it's made. This one is not even cheap. And there is probably only one suspect.

OBX knock off counterfeit parts are littering the market. despite the many countless quality issues they show up at sima shows pimping their chinese parts. headers, lsd

Interesting as I was looking to purchase these headers for my '99 Boxster and wrote to them asking what the differences were between their headers and the cheapo ones sold on eBay and they wrote back that it was the name only.

Looking to install OBX headers on a 3.2L with megaphones for track use with custom Wong chip and M&K dual out muffler for street use. Spoke to Steve today and he said phones are good for 8hp and headers about 10hp.
For those who used the OBX headers, how have they stood up after a couple of years of track/street use? Any cracks in the welds? I read the whole thread and am not clear on the ID/OD of the long tube headers, can someone please comment. |
Never mind, found the "cracked OBX" thread, it seemed too good to be true.
