How do I get my CIS Injector to seal properly?

Just replace a leaky injector on my 79 SC, but can't seem to get the new o-ring to "snap in". It's the ring around the base of the injector, which I assume must be installed on the injector prior to installing the unit into the intake? I can't get it to seat properly...
Multiple searches here turned up much discussion of sleeves/stakes, etc... but this seems so basic I feel dumb!
There is no crap/old ring left in the mating hole, but the new seal is a fat little donut that just wants to barely push into the intake hole.
HELP!
Thanks.

Lube the O-rings up with some gasoline and push them in with "authority".
