Updating Pelican's Project List - Need Suggestions...

Hi everyone. I'm performing an update on the Pelican Project List, which is one of the best features of the site. But, it contains a few bugs, and issues, and may not be 100% easy to use (I think I wrote it in one day about six years ago).

Here's a list of bugs / fixes / additions I am adding to the Project List, please let me know if you have any additional suggestions.

- Fix bug where adding kit parts doesn't populate the individual items
- Change Remove checkbox so that you can choose to remove or choose to "add all to shopping cart"
- Fix bug with OEM- parts that are not able to be moved to cart (also probably wizard parts too)
- Add "see this part in the parts diagrams"
- Add "more info" in conjunction with the "more info" screen being redeveloped for the shopping cart
- Add "see what other customers who bought this part also bought in addition"
- Recheck Safari / Firefox compatibility
- Ability to change username / password if necessary

Sounds good Wayne. The project list is nice to have.
Sorry for the off topic but instead of starting a new thread... Late last week I stopped getting email notification of subscribed threads. I checked and I do have that option checked. Any thoughts?

hey wayne, i dont know if this is already an option. is there a way to allow people that have posted parts for sale or cars for sale to go in and delete the post when the item is sold?

Hey Wayne would be good to be able to edit info in account like email address and such. I have a project list under my old email and cant migrate it to the new email address without calling cust. service. Thanks Jerry

Hi wayne...

it might by my own user error, but I had a hard time (impossible!) moving items from the shopping cart INTO the project list....I started down the shopping cart path before I realized there was a project list....and once you go down that fork, your are - well - forked!

great feature....looking forward v2.0

My 2 cents...

When selecting "View this part in parts diagram": when there is more than one choice ( E.g - this part is on 71E and 77S and 66T, etc...) allow the user to select their default that future Views will go to automatically.

Bug: When a part no longer exists that is in your project list, the back button doesn't work to take you back to your project list. E.g. when you get this: Ooops, this part appears to be in our main database, but it's not currently published in any of our parts catalog pages

The project list More Info button is redundant to the Part Number link, but the Part Number link is inconsistent.

Just make the project list category drop downs always there if possible instead of toggling between edit mode and viewing mode...

On items in the project list that don't have a "More Info" button, the part number hyperlink takes you to the item above it in your list.

Overall... great site!

It's done that way on purpose, from a business perspective. You can't make it too easy for people to defer an existing purchase that they might forget about later on...

This may be too challenging, but on your parts diagram in the catalogue, is there a method where you could scale out the diagram in order to see it in relation to other diagrams- move out a level as it were. Also, and this would take a lot more work, but perhaps color code systems- maybe just at interfaces- between fuel, air, electric and mechanical? The diagrams list parts, but it is not always clear where the interfaces are to other systems. That would help not only identifying parts needs but also for troubleshooting....

I really applaud all of the effort regardless- this is an INVALUABLE site for Porsche longevity!

Wayne: I think your changes are spot on. One question, couldn't you add a cookie or "garage" in which we could place our car(s) so that when you go to parts, you don't have to go thru the selection to go to your model?

I guess that's a petty "Gripe" as it's only a few keystrokes, but this site has gotten better thru the years, and this is one thing I've thought would be good.

hi wayne, i'm not sure this is the kind of suggestion you are looking for but i was thinking of a way to add used parts that we want to sell through pelican. basically the same way amazon does it with used books. often a book on amazon is offered as used from individuals to be ordered through amazon with the same process as a new book. i'm thinking that many of us have various parts that are not really worth listing on ebay etc.. you would basically be getting a cut on the transaction and instead of us listing a classified ad we would be able to clear out stuff we don't need. this very well might be more work than it is worth but it's an idea.

Wayne,

I love the project list feature, it's the main reason I use Pelican over any other web vendor for my parts.

A recent thread (started by you) addressed the issue of parts now having to be sourced from Germany, increasing order lead times among many other issues. Several items in my project list are such items, and I have no idea about their availability or status since they don't have a "move to cart" icon next to them. So in order to purchase these parts, I have had to call one of your employees to see what's going on.

Could there be a way to establish a "special order" icon so that (1) I know that the part is not usually held in inventory and (2) I don't have to call to order?

Wayne, unless I missed this feature, how about checking off items already purchased. I think the Project List is a great feature and being able to refer to it and know that parts have already been ordered would make it better.

I am in the midst of planning an engine rebuild and I have been thinking that a database of rebuilds that members have performed would be awesome. In fact I was considering building it and then posting a link for people to send me their info to be included. However, it would be better to have it be a actual part of your site. It would be database driven so searchable by key fields like year, engine type, turbo/supercharge/na, piston type, camshaft type, basically any and all components could be setup as fields and then be searchable so that one could get a listing of all combinations that contained a given set of parts. If people also had dyno data or longevity reports fields for this info could also be included. If would be a more dynamic and complete version of the two pages in your Engine Rebuild book showing the table of common engine combinations.

I know this is a big project and would be willing to help put something together if interested or I am fine with someone just running with the idea. If there is enough interest and you don't have the resources, I may try to do this myself in my spare time.

How about a "Users who purchase item X, typicaly pair it with item Y for a more complete repair." Example being I recently purchased 996 TT Pads from PP and I forgot the shims and anti-squeal compound. The transaction was flawless but a que for other necessary items would have been helpul and probably more lucrative from a business perspective. PP has great credibility with members and buyers so I feel this "referral" is much more genuine. It would be great for routine maintenance items or more complex project items.

9 years a member and I hardly miss a day of reading. Thanks for everything Wayne.

I really like the "Assessment" section in some areas of the catalogue- suspension bushings for example. In other words, why are some products better or the same (other than cost) than OEM, and if other items are required or need to be altered to work. I think it would be even more beneficial if it were linked or cited user comment or input- not just a marketing add from the maunfacturer, but real world input. Be really slick if the part or system linked to the project book in order to demonstrate installation also...
