Post Retrofit of Front A/C Condenser on 78 SC

Question-
Does anybody here have experience retrofitting the later front a/c condenser onto an earlier car that didn't come with it?
I was thinking I was going to add one to my car, but I'm not sure I want to hack a big hole in the body for the fan, and I'm wondering about the effectiveness of the front condenser w/out the the fan.

Anybody have some mid-resto shots of their late model SC showing this front pan area and the cutout for the condenser fan and the condenser mounts?

If not perhaps someone wouldn't mind taking a few shots of all the a/c stuff installed (maybe from trunk area, and from underneath as well)???

I would greatly appreciate any help you guys could provide me on this. Thanks.

I have a '78 Sc with air, I could be wrong but I don't think there is a fan under the condensor. Next time I have her up on stands I'll be happy to take some picks if you haven't already recieved some in progress picks.

On my 82 SC, there is a fan over the front condenser. It runs whenever the AC is on to draw air over the condenser.

I don't see why you couldn't retrofit one if your car doesn't have. It attaches to the front pan with 4 bolts. You will also need the protective cage that goes over it and a new lines that run up to it. One is long and thick and comes from the very back of the car. The other is short and small diameter and comes from the evaporator in the left front wheel well. If you want to add the fan on it, you will need to cut a square hole directly over top of the condenser (about 10" x 5") and another small square hole on the wall at the front of the luggage compartment where this fan has an air intake. You will also need switched power from the AC system (maybe already in your harness???). This fan does not have a fuse from the factory.

Good Luck.
Nick.

Hello

Actually there are different condensors and fans. Standard and Heavy Duty ( Arabiaa, Hong Kong, Indonesia ).

The Fan comes with an own harness that has a rubberrelaymount to fit in the correct hole.

The fan is controled on later cars via an pressureswich. Early cars have it all time runing.

Many people don´t recognize if the unit failed.

The fan is only helpfull on stop and go while useless under driving. The unit is boltet on from underneath you must use blind rivet nuts as the left side is under the battery podest.

My advice would be bolt it on and try it. If you feel you need the fan then go an other way.

You need to make an duct for the standard heater hose, then you use an long hose and an 914 heatblower. You vcan place it on the passenger side forward corner sucking fresh air trough an easier to make round opening.

Have you considered trying to get one of the 964/993 style condensors w/ fan which mount in the front of the driver's side front fender? You may need to get rid of the windshield washer resevoir, not sure.

I have installed the 964/993 oil coolers in early cars and have not had clearance issues. The size of the cooler is very similiar to the condensor.

May be worth looking into.

Dave, no I haven't, mainly I guess because I didn't know they had one up there. Not being familiar with them, is that one in the wheel well used in conjunction with a tail mounted unit, or is there also one behind the front valance? Do you have any pictures of an installation?

Re: the 993 oil cooler, is it bigger than a 964 cooler, or are they the same thing essentially?

Thanks,

The 964 and 993 units are virtually identical. There is no tail mounted unit with this configuration.

Here is a picture...

Here is the parts diagram...

Hello

Early wheelwel comndensors are aftermarked for pre 1974 cars. If you remove the washerbottle and gas ventilation........

964 993 condensor can fit it in a 3.3 turbo rearwing.
