Since the very late 80's, all vehicles were required to have a sealed windshield to meet structural specs.

You can still can kick it out, but chances are, you will hurt something.

Kroggers: if you want to do this to your 78, you are gonna need a:

993 windshield
body seal
windshield seal
antenna connector, if it does not come with ws
antenna amplifier

and a installer that understands what this upgrade is.

Danny_Ocean: I will get those photos I mention before, it's been crazy and rainny around here.

If I lived anywhere near LA, I'd be delighted to bring my car around and have you do it....but what do us guys in the Great White North (aka Canada) do? Has anyone got directions that even a windshield installer would understand?

A cursory search returned this:

Having problems with windshield upgrade to 964 style.

(They start discussing the 993 install about 5 pages in).

I was reading that when it was up to page 6, I don't know how most of those guys did, but a few that tried it leak. the company I used took care of it, the trick is in the hight if the sealant and the opening of the tube, if my IP allows it, I will post some pictures, I have one conversion in the works and it is still naked.

Sorry that you have to live so far, but, since I am not afraid of some competition, I may be able to help, if you find an installer that is not intimidated by some helpful tips, be sure to call on us.

this is one of our conversions: we use the top of a real 993 for electric top purposes, but you can see the differences of the windshield opening.

So the 993 lip has to be obtained & welded to the 911 windshield frame?

You can do that, but is a lot of work, I've seen guys trying to get cute and replace the 3/4 of the window frame, but that jeopardizes the structure of the car, a conversion on a coupe like yours, it has to be done the same way we did Ron's.

Now you see why the whole issue about glue, kicking ws out and rubbers trims comes about.

I have another installation coming up in a few days, I will take some pictures and post them, if anyone is interested.

So when you are referring to the "conversion" in the pic above, illustrating the welded-on lip, how does that apply to us (911 SC owners)?

Conversions and backdates is what we do most.

the car in the picture is a 78 cab, I used it just to show the differences on the window opening from a real 993 and a 911,

when a client comes in and ask for a 993 conversion, whether coupe or cab, we will make look as close as the real thing, if we use your car for example, we would have change the windshield, the window frames, the 1/4 windows, back window, door handles, original deck lid is optional, but I would have use the turbo third brake light, and also reposition windshield wipers, and squirt nozzles; of course, pretty much all the interior, which is quiet extensive.

The idea is to make it look as good as the real thing, and that only a trained eye can spot the differences.

OK, but...can I (or you) install a 993 windshield/trim in my '79 SC WITHOUT welding/cutting/modifying?

Yes, a 993 windshield can be installed on a 911 without doing anything to the frame, that's how this thread started, I installed a 993 ws to Ron's 911.

What's important here is understanding the installation, it's like finding a way to put a round peg in a square hole and ending up with a perfect fit, or at least, the closest possible.

I think then the question is how?

There are a number of us out here that would like to have the cleaner look that the 993 seal/windshield offers. Axiom.. what needs to be done?

Don't get me wrong... if I were in the LA area I would bring my car down and just have you do it.. I've seen your work and its impressive!

I have to replace a headliner in a 78 Turbo and I like the cleanliness of the 993 seal... since the windows will be removed anyway, I figure why not upgrade to the later seals?

On another note: I thought the 964 seals and windshield were very similar. Would it be simpler to update a 78-89 car with 90 to 94 windshield and seal or is this the same.

Thanks for a cool and informative thread guys..

How far are you prepared to travel?

Zuffenhaus in NC did exactly what Axiom said to my car....

I did it for the look, but I think since it is glued in it might even increase the torsional rigidity of the car.

I have no data to prove this.

I am real excited to do this on my car but just priced the cost of windshields. I can pick up an earlier windshield for $138 versus somewhere around $850 for the 993 glass. Does anyone have a considerably cheaper lead on these windshields?

Thank you for liking our work.

We had an install today and I took some pictures, unfortunately I am running a little late, (the honeydo list), I have not had the opportunity to see how Zeffenhaus does their installs, but as soon as I can I will post the pixs to share with you how we do it here.

The price of the windshield varies from place to place, so good luck to the interested and try to find a shop the understands the upgrade.

OK Gentlemen: here are some pictures of the intallation process of the famous 993 windshieldd, I was hoping that these pictures were better, but the sun has been a little shy in So Cal.

Obviously: we need the windshield the, the one seal to the body, the deco trim to the glass, hole on the dash for antenna, and the antenna amplifier. I hope these pictures are helpful. and yes, I am aware that this SC needed something else before the new windshieldd.

Any specific questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Wow, nice! Thank you Axiom... All I need now is to find someone in Sweden who is happy to do the job. I would want a heated front screen though

Thanks for the pictures, Axiom!!! I've been subscribed to the thread just in case. Luckily my glass is in decent shape...but you never know. FWIW, I prefer the looks of this weather seal over the stock one with the trim piece.
