Re-installing rear window trim?

Stupid question I know, but is there a trick to this? Inserting the metal trim pieces into the the rubber gasket around the back window? I tried lubing up the rubber piece with WD-40 but short of just pounding the hell out of the trim with a rubber mallet, it doesn't seem to want to go in right. Is there a trick to this?

Try some liquid dish soap or stop by am autoglass shop they may have secret soap

I've had one sitting in my tool box for several years...subscribing. I "think" it has to go on as the gasket is being installed. My car has an electrical tape "band aid" instead, so I hope I'm wrong and there's an easier way.

ps: Are you referring to the two that are at the bottom center of the rear window gasket?

The trim pieces should be fitted to the rubber befor installation of the screen. They are just a push fit this way.

Take care with them as they are easily damaged, with the screen out should take you about ten mins to install, the small pieces can be added after but it will be a bit tight. I would advise not to use black tape as the seal is a actually what keeps the screen in place once installed.

I'll post pics later tonight. Yes it's the two long extruded metal (aluminum, I think) pieces that sit directly under the rear window and "press in" to the rubber gasket. There's a small "hook" on the back side of the trim piece that obviously is supposed to engage the slot in the rubber gasket, but for some reason it's an absolute b*stard to get it to fit in all the way. Most of the trim engages properly (along the sides of the car before the piece "turns the corner" but on the rear part above the engine deck lid it sticks up about 1mm from the rubber trim and isn't engaging properly.

Thoughts?

You cant put them in after the window is in, must be done out of the car then installed as a unit. Take it back out.

Like said above, you CANNOT, repeat CANNOT, reinsert the trim locking strips with the glass still in the car.

The glass and seal must be removed, the trim reinstalled, then the whole assembly installed on the car as one unit.

Well Good, Now I don't feel so stupid. I never did get the trim in my rear targa window after making special tools, soap etc. If Tim cant do it then it really cant be done

Like its been said i tryed with the window in.......very very hard.
put the trim in the rubber while the rubber is on the the glass then put the hole lot back in........easy

Porsche-o - I may still have the name of a guy in Anaheim who will do it CHEAP and include the defroster jumper installation; pm me if you are interested. He'll come to you.

He charged me $100.00 to do it AND he removed and reinstalled my front windshield because some dope (me) didn't install it perfectly. At that point, I had to pay him $150 out of sheer guilt.

Interested. Yea, I'd pay for that. I have a bunch of other stuff to do on the car first (it's pulled apart pretty good in my garage right now) but I expect to have it back together and running again in a few weeks. Once that's done, sure - I'll take it down to a glass place and if they can do it, good deal.

It's probably time to re-seal the window and maybe replace the rubber strip anyway. The stuff is 35 years old, after all. . .
