Mono ball mount & Bilstein RSR strut

My monoball mounts (not Weltmeister)came with two spacers. When test fitting the mount to the top of the Bilsteins, it appears that a spacer goes down inside the top of the monoball, over the threaded part of the strut. There is not enough thread left to adequately tighten the nut down, though. I am thinking I can shave off some of the spacer to allow the nut to tighten. Also, it appears that the dust covers for the Bilsteins have to be left off. The strut top fits nicely inside the lower portion of the monoball with the dust cover off.
Anybody have experience with monoballs, and does my situation sound familiar? Is green paint available to refinish the struts? Thanks for the help.
