Guys,
Just thought I'd report on my sloppy shifter problem. I had originally changed all the bushings on the shift fork, but still had long throughs and when the shifter was in gear it moved around like it was in neutral. I drained the transmission oil and then removed the cover plate under the transmission. (Part #5 shown in link below) http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1974-75/3-4.JPG Sure enough all three bolts that hold the shift fork down (part #6) on the cover plate where loose. I tightened them up and put her back together. Shifting is no longer sloppy. It is tight and the distance needed to shift has been reduced significantly. So if you have this problem, and bushing didn't fix it. Do the above procedure, you'll be glad... Tony '78 911SC |

Was your shifter sloppy in all gears?
I just replaced the full complement of shifter bushings on my '77. The shifting is good and tight in 1,2, and 5. But 3rd and to a lessor degree 4th have slop in them. In 3rd I can move the shifter sideways a good bit. Since I know (or think anyway) the slop isn't in the shifter or coupling I now am suspecting the trans and your fix. Anyone have ideas on why 3rd would be sloppy? ------------------ Chuck - '86 Cab, '77 Targa, '85 toyota 4wd rain mobile http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/ |

Mine was sloppy in all gears. It's simple to do the above procedure. If you do plan on removing the inspection plate, be sure you have a gasket, because my old one go ripped when I removed it. I didn't have the Porsche gasket so I just picked up a blank sheet and made my own gasket.
Tony ps: make sure you drain the tranny oil first.... |
