Should I Update to 3rd Brake Light? Poll

Hey Y'all!

Need valuable advice:

I am contemplating instaling a 3rd Brake Light what do you guys think?

TIA.

I am not concerned about concourse because some options can be easily removed for the upleg buyer. If I ever sell it, probably not. I think I will be burried with her :D

gtihop 02-07-2008 04:11 PM

no- they look uneuropean! I'm taking mine off

oregonmon 02-07-2008 04:18 PM

Safer though.

dipso 02-07-2008 05:08 PM

Depends on where you plan to install it.
Might look cool up on top if you could get it to spin, kind of like a siren.

DRACO A5OG 02-07-2008 05:10 PM

Yeah, I can pull idiots over :) They do make strobe or gradient LEDs

dipso 02-07-2008 05:27 PM

Now we're talking.
All you need is a badge and a spinning third brake light. Hang out near the strip clubs around 3:00 a.m. and pull strippers over.
They are suckers for cops in Porsches.

Walter_Middie 02-07-2008 05:31 PM

I'd also get one of those beepers for when you are backing up - never can tell when there might be a Subaru owner back there - totally oblivious to anything going on around them.........

DRACO A5OG 02-07-2008 05:35 PM

I lend my Baby to my Cop Friend see if it works :-D Maybe he can bring me back one ;)

I could hear it now "Beep Beep Beep" they still won't see me :( Probably just hit me to shut me up. Beep Beep Beep "CRASH"

Mr.Puff 02-07-2008 06:08 PM

:) Put it in the window, at the top. I hate those "T" ones...

OR

Get a loud speaker and one that flashes on top of the car, like a strobe light, so you can play dance music. Get them strippers to dance for ya.

dipso 02-07-2008 06:15 PM

That's funny.

Mr.Puff 02-07-2008 06:18 PM

:) Brought one of my female friends to a strip club once for her birthday (her idea). Anyways, the strippers brought her on stage and stripped her :D. Good times. Tig ol' Bitties.

Don't use a periscope type brake light, or anything that's externally visible when your lights are off. Just wire in some LED's or an LED light bar, as discretely as possible.

A quote from a previous discussion about third brake lights went,

"If you don't like the look of third brake lights, then I guess you will like the look after someone rear-ends your 911?"

edit; I just noticed you are in Los Angeles. It is absolutely imperative you get a third brake light.

DRACO A5OG 02-07-2008 08:05 PM

No, my Baby's year makes her exempt. I was concerned about safety of not having a 3rd Light. You know I am in Traffic Capital of the World and allot of distracted Drivers on cell, eating, make up and the worst Texting.

Sometimes driving west on the Freeway the Sun is so bright Drivers get blinded that is why I was considering LED. Apparently the LED is bright enough to show in those conditions.

AngM018 02-07-2008 10:15 PM

If you drive in any conditions like I do here in NC then YES!

Your average joe around these parts dont know to look at the lower light. They always look for the third brake light. will save you a rear end job!

I would suggest a top rear window mount. Leave ET the alien back in the 80's where he belongs

What type of LED's would work well in oem interior housing?

Porsche-O-Phile 02-07-2008 11:51 PM

Too many idiots on too many cell phones driving too many big, dumb SUVs. Anything you can do to give yourself a fighting chance is worth doing. I say "do it".

If the car is driven on weekends only for trips around the block or far, far away from the hordes of idjuts, then maybe it's an acceptable risk. If it's driven around town - at all - I think you're taking your car's life in your hands by NOT having one. Just my $0.02.

I added one to my 944 - very easy to do. I am adding one to my 911 (factory type "cyclops" light that goes with the 930 tea tray tail) but I also have a straight decklid with no tail and no light for "period correctness" so when the need for it hits me, I'm covered. Maybe worth looking at - decklids are cheap enough.

at SuperBrightLEDs.com

The 24 bulb set would be best in Red. I found the white ones are dimmer. The 24 buld set has 6 of them in a radial pattern to illuminate the reflective side of the Lamp:

The 12 bulb at your local auto suply work well but even though they state wide angle, they are not wide enough IMO. You can see in all angles but they are less intense. The 24 bulb or any radial aimed LED in Red should do the trick.

Note: You may need a load equalizer so they do not glow lightly during daytime. If it doesn't bother you then you will be golden but it will shorten the advertised 100K hour life span of it.

I know several friends tried them and took them out because of this reason. Not only less intense, but some times not even seeing it lighting up from an angel, during the day.
