Central Locking System

My central locking system just went out. I checked voltage to the control unit (per the Bentley manual) checks OK. When I push the center counsel switch I hear a relay trip deep in the dash. So I think this is OK. But that’s as far as I can go. How do I trouble shoot the rest this system? Could be a micro switch but which one? Neither side locks. If one micro switch is out will the opposite side be non-functional?

Also…Now I find I can’t lock the driver’s side door. The passenger side can be locked by manually locking the door prior to closing it. The drivers side will not lock unless the door is latched closed. Is this by design or do I have other problems?

Hey Gary,

Almost certainly it is the Central Locking System Door Operating Rod that is behind that door panel that has gone bad. It is a rod about 8 inches long that has plastic cups on each end that snap onto a ball. The plastic gives out--as everything does sooner or later--and all that is left is the empty clicking of the relay. The part number is 964-537-571-00-M100. It is the same part for both sides, and this is the new part number as it has been redesigned since the original 911 days. They sell it here at Pelican.

When you have the door panel off it is a good time to lubricate the door mechanism--at least as much as you can get to--with a good heavy synthetic grease.

Make sure to carefully mark the wire color order on the electric window switches for easy reassembly.

I know the relay I hear is in the dash. The door actuators do not function (either side). The door operating rod would not cause the actuators from non-functioning. Thus, I think it's electrical. I may end up replacing both door micro-switches. When I do this I'll pay attention to any links that are ready to fail.

Oops, what I meant was the driver’s side door will lock manually from the inside (by rotating the locking knob). But it will not lock from the outside (with the key).

I pulled the door panel off to check for any binding in the linkages. The actuator moves freely. No damage to the links.

I don’t think it’s the door handle’s micro switch. If the switch on one side is out, shouldn’t the opposite door lock be operational? I can't believe two switches went out at the same time.
