G-50 Tranny Rebuild Question

I broke a shift fork on my G-50/20 tranny (993) so I had to go into it. I got it all apart and changed the fork, now it is time to go back together. When I disassembled it I tried to keep the operating sleeve assemblies together, but the 1/2 and 3/4 ones came apart. There are 3 driver dogs, springs, and balls in each one. I know how it is supposed to be when it is all together, but I can't figure out how to compress the 3 tiny springs with the balls and slip the operating sleeve over the whole assembly. Does anyone have any experience with this, or tips on how to do this?

Pete

I posted this on the other forum as well....

I do, and the 1/2 sleeve is a biatch! I suggest assembling them in a large clear plastic bag -- so when, not if, they go a flyin' -- you more than likely wont loose them.

Try some thick and heavy wheel bearing grease to help hold them in place while assembling. Its one of the more difficult things in assembling these gearboxes.

All three balls, springs and chicklets, as I call them, have to slide into place at the same time.

So if I understand correctly you do all three at once. I tried "glueing" the little balls to the springs with thick grease. I started on the 1/2 assembly first and I haven't made any progress. Do you try to compress all three springs with your fingers and then slip the operating sleeve over it? It seems like you need at least 4 hands. Did you do this alone or was another person needed? Maybe I'll try the 3/4 assembly now if it is easier to "warm up"

That's the general opinion. Another person is a huge help. Ask cstreit for some advice. He's done a few of these DIY style.
