Is it possible to verify running condition of engine that is not installed?

I was wondering if it's possible to check the running condition of a 911 engine that is not installed in a car. I mean, is it possible to check important elements like compression and oil pressure of an engine on an engine stand? Do engine rebuilders have any way to know that the engine they built is going to be perfect before they install it? Thanks for any input.

Some places have a transmission case to mount a starter and a stand. Or, you can take it to an engine dyno shop set up for a flat six. You could also find a tranny and crank the motor over to gain oil pressure and try for a cold leak down which will be less telling than a warm leak down. At least if a valve is bent or leaking badly, you would hear it while cranking.

I think you can do a lot of diagnostics with the motor out of the car. Just don't try and run it on the ground. That's not too smart and won't tell you much more than the leak down. Maybe you could hear a bad tensioner or rod bearing if you had a muffler, but other than that, I wouldn't do it.
