Wink DME Relay differences BIG 993/964

On the board recommendations I replaced the DME relay in my euro 93 C4. I ran down to the Porsche Dealer and for 39 dm ($19) picked up the new relay. On the side it indicated DME Relay and the serial number started with 993 (not the normal 964). This relay is about 1/2 in taller than the one I took out. Both were made in Hungry. I am hoping that the new one is more reliable than the the old one (and fixes the problem!). I took it out for a quick run tonight and it does idle a little soother (all in my mind??). Any thoughts?

I had a problem with the engine cutting out at speed on my 90 C2. Drifting off the the shoulder on the LIE was not a pleasant experience. Someone on this board suggested the DME relay may be at fault. Bingo! Replaced the relay with the new 993 numbered part and it works fine. It is slightly taller. My wrench says that he's seen a few similar incidents where it fails. I removed the cover on the old one and it has a faint smell identical to a heater relay in an 84 I had that overheated. It may be wise to keep a spare.

Where is the DME relay located on a 964? My car is a 94 and I'm interested to see if it has the new (993) version or not. My car has always idled around 1050. . .might be worth a try.

Thanks.

Mike: Its under the front lid, passenger side near the windshield. The fuse/relay black box. The diagram inside the cover gives location. It says 'DME relais' on the top along with 944 615 227 00 The new one has 993 in place of 944.

Fred,

Thanks. Mine has the 944 prefix as well. Should I specifically ask for the 993 version or is this the standard replacement?

Best regards,
Mike 94 C2 cab
