Porsche Crest Installing 1983 911 sunroof, help

I decided to replace my headliner in my 1983 911 SC. Genuine German vinyl! So I carefully placed the cables back into the guide tubes and then pushed the sunroof until I felt the cables stop. At this point I am assuming the cables are at the motor gear. The thing that gets me is that the sunroof cables do not feed evenly. There is always one side of the sunroof that pulls quicker than the other causing the sunroof to not close properly in the seated position.
Does anyone have a tip for me? This has caused me too many hours of lost driving time...
There has to be a trick or something I've blatantly missed.
