If you run Webers...take note

I just received one of my 40IDA3C Webers back from Pierce Manifolds in Gilroy, CA. This carb was beat pretty bad. You could hear the throttle shaft rattle in the bore at idle. Pierce bored that end of the carb and installed an oversize shaft, so it is as good as new. Pierce was recommended by Richard Parr at PMO as he sells new carbs, but does not work on customers' carbs. I will tell you that the quality and turnaround time was excellent and I paid less than I have read these rebuilds run. The casting looks brand new from the cleaning. I only had them bore for the shaft and install it. I had rebuilt (gaskets, cleaning, etc.) before. They also sell all parts for all Webers. I bought new floats for both banks. So loose it could rattle? Wow! My IDA40 shafts can be wiggled by hand, maybe 10-20 thounsandths, but a Georgia mechanic (not Porsche) said "them thangs is wore slam out" (beyond tolerance, I assume). Can I ask what yours cost to repair? I would like to have both mine done...Thanks!

Yes, how much was it? Why did you only get one back?

The right carb was worn more than the left. So I only had the one bored. The job was for one short shaft only. The other end was in spec. Don't ask my why, just the way it was. Labor $75, shipping $10, short shaft $36. I bought 4 new OEM floats @ $26 ea. and 2 complete gasket sets @ $13 ea. door to door 2 weeks.

Yeah those "thangs" do wear. "Don't slow it down none though. Might hunt a bit at idle, but shucks, gives it char'cter. 'N if I had a wilder cam then it'd have even more char'cter."

For me, I'm not particularly interested in how the darn things idle as long as its got the grunt when I tickle the load pedal.
I guess if you had emmissions concerns to worry about or were just a perfectionist you could fix all those worn out shafts. Weber's wonderful range of performance really isn't significantly affected by those "rattling" shafts.

Anyhow, it sounds like great service at a reasonable price for anyone who wants to improve idling characteristics. Keep this kind of info flowing!
