There is no "best place" but the 911 classifieds here is a good start. Also the local classifieds, traders, local PCA forums.

You can try ebay, just make sure to get it checked out before you pay. I've even traveled to look at a car.

If they won't let you get it checked, stay away.

Seen a few good cars on Craigslist also.

I bought mine on ebay, but it was local, so I was able to look it over and drive it prior to bidding. It was cheap and had many problems when I bought it (that the PO did not fully explain in his ebay listing). Worked ok for me, YMMV

I have also found a car here and two on Autotrader.com.

Pleco, you might also try a want to buy in the 911 cars for sale here. Never know who might just be thinking about selling theirs.

In the past three years I purchased 3 911's and a 930. Here is my assessment of each purchase. A lot depends on your motivation and what is driving your purchase.

First 911 was bought off Ebay. Good price and a good car. I had it checked out with a thorough PPI. Required a bit of cosmetic work and probably could have done better if I took more time but the wife gave me a narrow window of opportunity.. Bottom line if you are careful you can do okay. Also, provides for a quick opportunity for a transaction if your itch needs to be scratched.

Second was the 993. It was a local transaction so I got to see the car and have it checked out by my wrench. Excellent car, great transaction. Highly recommended way to buy but takes some luck in timing and patience to find the right car.

Third was the '73T. Bought it off this forum by a respected member who served as a broker for the seller. Again, good car and smooth transaction. Another good way to buy but takes patience and an almost obsessive requirement to scan the boards several times a day to make sure you get at the front of the line for that special car. Don't fear getting a PPI for an out of state car. You can get guided to the right shop by this board. Also getting your own broker to find you that special car might be a good option.

Most recent and best method IMHO was my 930S. My wrench turned me on to this car. Generally, your quality local shops will know the best cars in the area and the ones that may be for sale under the radar or if the right push is offered. Sometimes you might have to wait a while but if you let your wrench know just what you are looking for and you are patient it can really pay off..

Hope this helps....

Luxury Car Network is worth looking at; also look on Rennlist. Be careful with being pressured to not get a PPI. Also, it helps to check a lot of sources to help define what you are looking for and what the going prices are. My suggestion would also include using a dealer as a last resort, but occasionally they do have worthwhile vehicles that are at a fair price.

Where are you? Please add your location to your profile- that way someone may know of a good candidate close to you. FWIW, +1 for Craigslist- that's where I found mine.

Good luck with the search!

Paul.

I bought mine off of a fellow Pelican after looking everywhere for a few months. I posted a "Want to Buy" ad in the used cars section of this forum and found a spectacular car within a few miles of me.

Also, check with local Porsche shops in your area.

Great place to get a feel for the market is "Auto Trader" you can customize your search by year, geographic, color etc.

Luck man,

Scott

Your local PCA....at least it's owned by someone who cares enough to join the club.

www.pca.org and you can look by region...each region has it's own website and usually lists cars for sale. The region President or AX chair can also make recommendations for shops to do a PPI.

I also strongly recommend contacting your local PCA group. Many of the regions have their newsletters with classified ads on line (pca.org). Your local PCA group will be most helpful in your search. If you really want to look around at other websites, this exhaustive list will keep you busy for hours http://rallystuff.com/pcar_sources.html
Good luck

Look at the classifieds in Excellence magazine.
You can see these online as well as in the magazine.
