Hi - I've been going through the electricals in my 85. So far, I've pulled about a pound worth of wires from an aftermarket stereo install, not including the weight of the actual stereo. I still need to work on tracing all of the alarm wires from that install as well.
With all of the aftermarket installs, I am concerned that I may have some higher amp fuses stuck in as replacements, from the PO (or PPO). I seached and found the post that had a pic (from a manual) of what is supposed to be an 85, but the fuses I have are so different from what's shown, I would like a confirmation. Once I get home tonight I can post up a pic of what I have, but would appreciate it if anyone w/ an 85 could post up a picture of what their front fuse panel looks like. TIA

I think all the fuses in my photo are "as original". Looks like you've got a headlight relay. Here's mine after I installed the Sucro headlight relay. Paul ![]()

Yes, the headlight relay was my doing, along with a BLSAS relay. The rest was done by the wiring gremlins. Thanks for the close up.
My one question is the last fuse (far right in your above pic) - is it a 25 amp (blue) or an 8 amp (white). Your fuses match up exactly to the image I pulled off of Pelican, assuming the last fuse is blue. I know how much they can vary in "blueness" depending on the manufacturer. Thanks!

Hi Josh
I don't have the car here, but from the photos, I'm pretty sure it's white. Here's a page from the Bentley -- looks like the 8 amp should be a 16 amp. I don't use the fogs much, and the 8 has never blown on my car. Paul ![]()

Paul - thanks for the Bentley schematic. I should be well on my way, thanks to your help.
Cheers

BTW, my inline fuse blew last week, knocking out all my headlights (think I had a 25 amp fuse in there, but don't remember and haven't been able to get it out of the fried fuse holder. Headlights seem to work fine since I replaced the inline fuse (with 30 amp fuse in there now). However, now my fog lights blow their 16a fuse. Haven't had time to try and diagnose the issue. ![]() ![]()

Blown inline headlight fuse...
Hi Steve,
Here are my $0.02 worth... Fuses are meant to protect wiring "downstream" of the fuse from overcurrent conditions. There are a number of reasons for overcurrent, the most probable being a short to ground (chassis) somewhere. Since the main relay kit power wire only goes from the positive battery terminal to the dual relay socket and there is normally no way for this wire to get shorted to ground in that short section, I am not a big fan of fusing that wire (I admit that if there were an internal relay short from pin 87 to 85 or 86, the inline fuse would be helpful). All that being said, I do not recommend using anything larger than 25A in that position. I would also be very interested to hear what exactly caused the large current draw as can be seen by the looks of the melted fuseholder/wiring. I used to use a very simple bimetallic inline circuit breaker that could be a good solution to people wanting to "fuse" the main without risking having the headlights be inoperable until the main fuse is replaced. I'll check to see if it's still available and then post to the list. Thanks, Marcus Sucro |

Marcus-
Thanks for your thoughts. I sent you an email a few days with some additional questions. Steve

since this thread popped up again, I thought I'd give everyone an update. I've restored all the fuses back to their original rated amperage. everything is working fine and I feel much better knowing that I no longer have any "over amped" circuits. I also ran into the issue of not being able to readily find any 5 amp fuses. Ended up having to buy 3 assortted packs to get enough to finish the job. If anyone else is planning on doing this, I'd recommend buying a pack of the 5 amp'ers from our host. thanks again for everyone's help
