SSI Exhaust/Heater Hose

Ok, folks I need a little input here. I have the thin flange SSI exhausts on my '80 SC coupe. On the left (American driver) side the distance between the SSI heater tube intake is only a few inches from the connector on the engine shroud. It is so close and at such an odd angle that it is impossible to get the Porsche 3" diameter heater hose to make the bend to connect the two duct ends. The only tubing that I could find that was flexible enough to connect the two together was a rubber fabric w/wire hose from another automobile application. The problem is that I believe the heat from the stainless heat exchanger will sooner or later (probably sooner) damage the rubber hose.

Has anyone come up with a satisfactory ( ie. long lasting) solution for this "issue"??

Thanks,

The correct back dated engine tin piece that replaces that little square piece will take care of it, IIRC.

And while you are rustling up a different piece of engine tin, I'd not worry about what you have melting. That's one of the good things about stainless - it is a very poor conductor of heat.

But I'm going to take Surf's advice also, and rustle around in my engine tin pile. When I got my SC engine I promptly put on my old '74 exhaust (since upgraded to SSIs). And cursed a bit whenever I needed to deal with this issue by forcing things. He just lit a candle.

You might also keep in mind that any time the engine is running, air (at close to ambient temperature) is flowing through this hose. The hot air is at the other end of the heat exchanger. You might get a little heat soak when the engine is first turned off.

I've got a couple lengths of the orange, hi-temp, fiberglass, wire-reinforced, duct hose from McMaster-Carr sitting around if you're interested.
will not melt.

Just use the correct engine tin and like surflvr said the problem will be solved and you can use the right heater hose.

Cool Something to try.............

I think I will try removing the corner piece of engine tin, cut a piece of the 3" heater hose, insert on the engine tin and then slide the hose onto the heat exchanger. Last step will be to bolt back into place. Might save having to buy a new corner piece. I just had the engine tin powder coat painted and would like to keep the pieces that I have. Thanks for the suggestions!

IIRC, I used 2 1/2" diameter orange SCAT hose from Aircraft Spruce without a problem in that spot. I did not change the corner piece tin.
