Yet another.... IROC conversion(Ducktailed)

Hi all,
I'm starting up a thread to document my 1st ever conversion,(although I have 2 fellow pelicanites guiding me through it all, Al Kosmal (engine and spiritual guidance) and Afterburn 549 (welder and D.I Y. guru).
Of course seeing all the IROCS as of late helped fuel the fire,(thanks 911teo and gertvr).
I have been lucky enough to finance my project so far by selling parts of my 911 that i would not be needing..and..oh yea, also sold my yamaha R6...and this is what i started with.....

It will eventually be a ducktailed 74 IROC look a like, (color to be either the 74 iroc light green or the orange) too many mexico blue's out there(which I love). the wheels will be 17x9 and 17x11 fuchs(done by Jim Lyons of True Design Wheels) should recieve them this up coming week, will post pics when recieved.
Tires are 255/40/17 and 315/35/17 sumitomo htrz's,here they sit waiting for their mates.

Tony,
The wheels are absolutely sick....very deeeeep. Looks like Jim Lyons is living up to the good rep. Good choice. Nice, does not describe them. I vote orange. oh, wait ..the light green...no..orange.....?

WOLVERINE 03-18-2008 09:37 PM

the wife also votes orange.....now i just need to find the correct paint code.

Great project! I personally would vote for the Green but if your wife votes for the Orange, then that's the way you should go.

I do have a question on the rear suspension.....do you have to go to longer trailing arms when you go with the wider fenders and wider rims in the rear? If so, are they the 930 trailing arms?

Hate to admit this but there is an orange I see on some newer Mustangs that is absolutely awesome. A friend here in the office (MUCH younger guy) is a big Mustang fan and says he thinks the color is called Grabber(?) Orange. It would suit an older 911 to a "T", although it's probably not politically correct. I have only seen the bright Porsche Orange once in the flesh and it was on a GT 3 RS...very cool color...called Tangerine?
We'll be following this thread, that's for sure.
Edit...for blue I ALWAYS go to Fishcop...coolest blue color I've ever seen.

Helmethead,
How difficult was the alignment of the front bumper, with the custom brackets.

What I did first was clamp the bumper on where I thought it should be mounted and then slid a small piece of the square 1" tube in from the backside where my mounts would be bolted to the factory bumpershock mounts...and marked the inside of the bumper. I then fab'd the brackets and glassed them to the bumper. The mounting brackets bolted to the shock mounts on the car were make excessivly long so I could refit the bumper and figure out where they would hit on the brackets which were glassed in and mounting plates were then bolted to the bumper side brackets.. Once I got the length figured out I tacked the mounting plates which I bolted to the glassed in bumper side brackets and unbolted the plates and then finalized the welds giving me a bolt on bumper/bracket assembly.
As for alignment...all the brackets and mounting of the bumpers was done with the fiberglass pieces held in place where they would be when completed...sortof worked backwards versus building brackets and then figuring out how to adjust them.

I have yet to complete the front bumper/push bar assembly which will be welded in between the two bumpershock mounts...which will ultimatly hold the front mounted cooler and offer some additional crash protection.

I really like that tan color VW is using on their bugs these days. Their orange is pretty cool too.
