78 SC High Idle from cold restart idle fine
Hi
I have just bought a 78 911 SC and when i start it from cold it idles at about 2200 RPM and even after its warm the idle will not drop at all. I have driven the car for a half an hour from cold and when i stop the idle stays at 2200 rpm. Here is the strange part, after i park up for about half an hour i start the car and it idles perfect at 900 rpm and continues to run perfect and normal idle each time i stop. Can anyone give me an idea where to start. Thanks for your time Dave |

Fisrt thing to check: do you have an hand throttle lever? If yes it could hold your pedal slightly pressed. It is a black lever on by the E-brake lever and heating levers and directly linked to the gas pedal and the butterfly. Make sure it doesn't hold the throttle pedal down.
I had this issue on my 78 SC: the pedal did not came back enough to completly close the butterfly. Good luck

I will try
I have a lever but it doesnt appear to do anything. Even so how would the situation change after the car has been left for a half an hour or so.
I will try to connect this device to rule it out. thanks |

One of the devices that controls the idle is called the AAR for Automatic Air Regulator. It is mounted on the right side of the engine about over the middle cylinder on that side (#5). It should have two large vacuum hoses attached to it along with a two wire connector. The wires provide 12 volts to heat a bi-metallic spring that, when warmed up, causes the AAR port to close and let the idle speed drop. If the unit is not getting the 12 volts, the bi-metallic spring won't close the valve when it should. If the connector is not plugged in, check to make certain that it is getting power and then plug it into the socket securely. There should be a wire locking clip to hold it in place. Even without the 12 volt circuit, the warm engine will eventually cause the bi-metallic spring to close the valve. I hope this helps you resolve your idling problem.
