Flywheel fit into Bell Housing
Does anyone know how far the flywheel needs to go to fit into the transmission bell housing?
I am thinking of using a 3.2L flywheel with a 1973 915 tranny, and am concerned that the DME teeth might interfere with the depth to which the flywheel can go. That would prevent mating of the two units. It looks like the flywheel will go about 2 cm into the housing -- just putting the loose flywheel in to test. |

I can't answer your question, but I curious as to the circumstances to why you are doing this. Are you mating the 915 to a 3.2 or just using the newer flywheel on the 2.4??

A simpler answer is that the 3.2 flywheel will fit along with either the steel or aluminum pressure plate to any 915. You just need to cut the bell housing to clear the crank sensor. (assuming we aren't talking about a G50 flywheel here)
BTW, don't bother cutting it for the top sensor, as this can be eliminated. It was only there for the factory to check the timing prior to delivery.

I have a carb'd 3.2L motor with dual 964 distributor (twin-plugged), so need for crank sensors. It is an '84 engine so no G-50 issues. I am mating it to a 915 transmission. Let me know if there is any big advantage to using the Fidanza flywheel or something... it is intended to be a hot street motor, not for a track. |

Are you using the crank sensor anymore? I would say no with carbs and 964 dist. What I did was cut off the crank trigger teeth on the flywheel and did not have to cut into the bell housing since I am not using the stock sensors (my sensor is on the front). This helps with the clearance, although it fit either way. Hope this helps.

Just want to be sure everybody knows what Tyson is talking about. He's not referring to the upper sensor of the group of two, which sit at ~ 2 o'clock on the bellhousing area- both of these are needed. He's referring to the diagnostic sensor which sits at 12 o'clock atop the bellhousing. It's a sensor that's mounted horizontally to the engine case with two M6 screws and fits between the engine sheetmetal/tin shrouding.

I could have a machinist cut off the DME teeth on the flywheel. But it seems like [a] you then introduce a rebalancing issue, and [b] shouldn't I have sold it to someone that needed those teeth (in a fit of public interest activity) and bought an SC flywheel for myself...
BTW - if anybody has an SC flywheel for cheap, let me know. |

Do the 3.2 and 3.0 have the same bolt pattern at the crank? I believe I was told they don't, that's why I did what I did.
