Goodyear or Bridgstone

Is anyone using Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 or Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position tires. I am looking for an opinions on these tires I have a 82 Targa that needs to have the tires replaced.

Many thanks

Keith

Not sure where you are located (weather issues). What you use your car for (street vs track). Tire-rack did a test on 4 premium ultra high perf. Bridgestone Pole Pos and Goodyear F1 A/S where two of them. The Good year came in second.. the Bridgestone 4th. The best for dry driving (street and track) in all categories was actually the Pirelli P-Zero Nero. It won in every category but wet including comfort. The Goodyear edged the bridgestone in the wet. I actually had a set of Potenza 940's on my 83 sc and replaced them with the Pirelli's. The pirelli's stick like their super glued to the road in the dry and my car rarely sees rain. I use mine for street only. it also depends on what you do with them. I believe I read that the goodyears were alittle more comfortable than the bridgestone's which might not be a good thing on the track. Can you go wrong? when you look at the actual test data... the difference between 1st and 4th, was less than 1.0 points in EVERY category. Even the wet traction for the Pirelli was .5 of 1 point at #4 vs the Goodyear at #1. They are all also right around the same price point ($125-$150 a tire). I say go with which ever one looks best on your car... I have liked the pirelli's... but also had no complaints with the Bridgestones and they were 8 years old. just my humble opinion...

Thanks for the response. My 82 targa is street driven only on dry NY roads The TireRack does not have the Pirelli P-Zero Nero's in 225x 50 16's for the rear. I have Bridgestone S02's that are dry rotted and I would like to improve the ride

You might also consider the Fuzion ZRi's. I just put a set of these on my 83 yesterday. They replaced my Yoko ES100's. I looked and looked, and finally came down to a 3-4 choices after sorting the opinions and test results. The set of Fuzions (205/55/16 and 225/50/16) were $450 installed. I also thought about the BFG Gforce Sports, the Goodyear F1's, and the Michlein Pilot Sport Cups. I had so many people say so many good things about the Fuzions, I decided, especially considering the cost, they were worth a try.

Hopefully more people will start adding tire reviews to the Ultimate tire review thread (The utlimate tire review thread...) as it is nice to hear reviews from people that actually drive the same car (basically) that you do.

Good luck!

My 2004 VW R32 came with Eagle F1 GS-D3s & I liked them very much. So, when it came time for tires for the 911, I bought Eagle F1s. I have been very pleased with them, particularly in the wet where they are fantastic.

I drive my 911 about 2,800 miles a year, including 4 track days. I have no complaints about the Eagle F1s. In fact, I just put a new set on my R32, so I have now owned 3 sets of them.

One more thing...the Eagle F1s are relatively inexpensive, compared to other high-performance tires. And, Goodyear seems to occasionally run promotions where they offer $40 Visa gift cards with the purchase of 4 F1s, so watch for them. I got gift cards both times I bought the tires.

I've got Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 on two cars and love them. Pretty darn sticky and fantastic in the rain. In fact I use them as rain tires on my track car.

I have been happy with a recent set of BFG G-Force sports. The price is right on these as well.

I also have an extra nearly new pair of Pilot-Primacy 225-50 16's that I have listed for 75.00/pair on the parts for sale page. PM if interested.

I just had a set of RE050As put on, its too early to tell, but so far, they are as smooth as butter and have nice grip. I wanted a quiet tire because I can't stand tire noise.

I've had the Goodyears since around mid summer of last year. While I woulnd't call them "terrible" they are certainly not what I expected. They feel very "squoogy" or greasy to me like they slide around a lot, and in fact, they do.
During autocross, it's tire squeal city. I can almost feel the sidewalls flexing...in fact, a couple sessions ago some sort of factory tire sticker made it's way from the inside of the tire to the outside, and lodged in the bead. At the next run, the sticker dissapeared ...

In the wet, they seem very good. In the dry, I'm not too impressed.

Here's a couple AutoX vids shot this month...a 360 spin and a near spin...

Run 2

+1 Great dry and wet weather tires for street use here in the Northwest. I have them on my 88 Targa. Wouldn't dare venture out in snow or ice though!

I chose the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s on my 16" wheels for my Florida daily driver because of their wear rating, wet/dry performance, price and ride. I can't compare them to the others, but am very satisfied with their performance in the categories I chose them for.

Just put them on my 84 coupe a couple of months ago - have driven a couple of times in the wet (live in the NW) just to test them out - very impressive - satisfied customer!

I have the GY Eagle F-1 GS-D3s on my wife's Miata, and am very impressed. I can go around corners in the rain much faster than the old tires when dry.

If anything, a bit more grip than I wanted- The Miata was fun to drift around corners, but needs insane speeds to drift with the Goodyears.

Porsche Crest Tire options, stay with the Michelins

My 86 3.2 runs Fusion ZRi's. Not too happy about the cornering as the sidewalls seem to roll under a bit and causes 'pushing'. For all around use, a good tire, reasonab;e cost. Will switch to Mich's when these are done.

The '01 Boxster just ate a set of 235 P Zeros in 4500 miles. This is during normal street driving, no AutoX or DE. No hotrodding either. The 205 fronts lasted about 5500 miles. Just put a set of Mich Pilot Sport Cups on the Boxster.

'90 964 C4 runs Pilot Sport Cups. IMHO, a very safe and reliable tire. Good all around performance. They seem to be very good in "damp" conditions. I usually judge a tires wet performance by it's stopping power. The Mich's do a wonderful job of staying on the pavement in the wet.

Many thanks for the post/opinions. It appears no one is using the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position

I had them on my Boxster just before I sold it. I loved them. I just put new Potenzas (but RE760s) on my Subaru, and I love them. So much that Julie will get them on her Subaru when we replace her wheels in a month, and my next Porsche will get some form of Potenza as well. They are always highly rated on the Tire Rack site, and they've never disappointed us.

...and no, I don't work for Bridgestone.

RE050s dont work on a 911 at all. The sidewall is not stiff enough for the rear weight. I had these on a 964 Turbo and I had to remove them after a week of messing with the tire pressures all the way up to the max tire pressure; felt like I was driving on a balloon.

I still use Bridgestone S02s, I like them more than the S03.

Michelin Pilot is also a great street tire.

I ran the Eagle F1s on a GLI; that was a pretty good tire but they don't hold up as well end of life as an S02. Agter the Eaglers were toast on the GLI, I went S02 on that and it was even better.

I just can't seem to find anything that will beat S02s for raw handling on the street.
