Cool BlownSix Intercoolers!!!

WOW, how good do these BlownSix intercoolers look and their flow specifications seem pretty impressive!

http://www.blownsixdesign.com/965.htm

Their full-bay ones would be even more impressive

Thumbs up

That's a picture of my intercooler getting ready for it's final polish. I'm hoping to have it in my hands next week. I'm anxious to get it on my car and try it out. Here are the pics they sent me of my IC in progress:

Thanks. I'll be posting more pictures once I get it installed. I'll probably do some more dyno runs afterwards as well.

One of the owners of Blown Six is a friend of mine. He is a true enthusiast currently drives a wicked 94 3.6 turbo (maybe 3.8 now, can't remember) that is track prepped for DE and such. I saw some pics from the development of the intercoolers as well. They seem to be of high quality.

Cheers

Tripster (Mark) bought one of each style, CT2 and full bay. He plans to test both soon and will report back the results.

There is a big problem, in my opinion, with the C2T style. It does not fit a 930. You must use the C2T turbo-to-intercooler tube which is big $$.

Hmmm, I will let Mike know and see what he thinks about making a tooling change on that one Brian.

The C2T IC does fit a 930 without any problems, so long as you remove the AC and the rear wiper motor. You are correct about the turbo-to-intercooler hose (930 110 368 00). It currently costs $300 alone, and that's the price from Pelican. I'm glad I bought mine a few years ago when the price was about half that!

Another option would be a short aluminum transition that tapers from 2.75" at the turbo to 4.0" at the IC. Not sure if those sizes are accurate, but you get the idea. That tube could then be connected with short sections of straight silicone tube.

My 1981 930 with a factory C2T IC installed:

I'm having BlownSix build me a full length unit for my blown Carrera, so they are building me one with a custom rear end tank to suit my application. Should be a very nice compliment to the GT35R

My BlownSix C2T intercooler arrived yesterday. Actually, I ordered 2 of them. One for myself and one for a friend. Unfortunately, UPS was pretty brutal with the packages and the outlet that connects to the throttle body was bent out of round on both intercoolers. I am going to suggest to BlownSix that they improve their packaging in this respect, because otherwise the packaging was great. Luckily, I'm pretty decent when it comes to fab work, and I grabbed a hammer and large piece of aluminum bar stock. A couple of minutes and a few "love taps" later, I had pounded the outlet back to nearly perfect.

I already have a C2T intercooler installed on my 1981 930, using all factory parts. I was hoping for a best case scenario of unbolting the factory unit and swapping it for the BlownSix piece. It turns out that it's not quite that simple. The factory brackets will work fine with some minor adjustments. I had to open up the slots slightly on the fan housing bracket to get a bit more adjustment. It was also necessary to slot the factory L-brackets a little deeper in order to get the intercooler to seat properly at the throttle body. But the major interference comes from the deck lid. It appears that I will need to grind off about 1/2" from the inside lip at the rear of the deck lid in order to clear the intercooler and allow the deck lid to close. After that, I hope to be able to drive the car! Maybe tomorrow...

Here are a few pictures taken yesterday during my installation:

UPS = fired out a high velocity cannon. . .

BTW - It looks really nice. Haven't seen the car in a while. (since Swift I think) You just keep doing more!

Ouch, and what's up with the ugly/sloppy stamping too! They've got some details to work on.

I got my car running tonight with the BlownSix C2T intercooler. It's a bit too late to go for a drive, so unfortunately that will have to wait until tomorrow. However, I'm happy to say that it wasn't too difficult to finish the IC installation. It was necessary to make the slots deeper in the factory C2T L-brackets in order to get the IC to seat fully at the throttle body. This, however, may not be the case with an actual C2T as my car is a rather highly modified 1981 930. If you have a C2T, you may not need to go to these lengths to install one of these monster ICs.

For those who are interested, I have documented the remainder of the installation process with pictures:

Machining the slots deeper on the factory C2T L-brackets:

Stock L-bracket on left, modified L-bracket on right:

The intercooler was installed on the modified L-brackets:

My Mikita angle grinder was handy for trimming a 1/2" x 4" section inside the deck-lid. You can barely notice this modification:

The deck-lid now closes:

I had to leave the bolt out of the fan bracket mount, otherwise the deck-lid would not close. The rear edge of the IC would stick up just far enough to keep it from closing with the bolt installed. We're talking less than 1/4" interference at the rear-most corners of the IC. I plan to drill a new hole slightly more than 1/4" below the existing hole and weld another M8 nut to the back of the bracket:

It's alive:

I have emailed Michael at BlownSix regarding the problems with their packaging. Hopefully they will improve upon this in the future, as the intercoolers seem to be very nice units.

Cheers,

Quite nice.

My factory parts are on order from the dealer and may be here in a few weeks - some are on backorder.

Thanks Brian for ALL the help with your awesome WUR, solenoid kit, and C2 IC parts help!

From what I've seen of the Kramer IC's, their tank design is crap, compared to the BlownSix tanks. They wouldn't be as efficient IMO.

Kramer???? Their IC designs are now 25+ years old. Great conversational and garage \ museum piece, but I would be hard pressed to put one on my car.

81 930 - That looks awesome, beautiful install!
