Strange starter issue
Hello,
My '79 911 sc recently developed an odd starter problem; I hope that someone here is familiar with it. First, I tried to start the car, there was a wizzing sound - it sounded like the starter was turning but the engine definitely wasn't. I push-starter the car and drove it home from my brother's house. At home, once I parked the car, I shut it off and tried to start it again. This time, the car started but the starter would not stop turning after I let go the key. I shut off the engine and the starter kept turning even after I took the key out of the ignition. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. Any advice? - Many thanks. |

It sure sounds like the solenoid is bad. But be sure before you buy a new one, check the starter mounting bolts for tightness. Some people find it hard to tighten the upper nut, so they leave it partially loose.
If you need a new solenoid, I'd recommend getting a rebuilt starter from Bosch. If you need to change the wiring connection to the solenoid (they changed from a loop and nut connector to a flag connector), then be sure to use a thick enough wire. I'd say 10 gauge or so. Otherwise your solenoid may not have enough power going to it. |

While your there, make sure that your ring gear is not damaged from the starter bendix hanging up. Sometimes when it "runs over or over runs" your starter, there is some damage to watch for. Make sure all of the teeth on the starter are still good and without any damage to them. If they are damaged, it is possible that the ring gear may have suffered damage also. Good luck!! Tony.
