Hose clamps on brake feed line
I am going to be replacing my master cylinder on Friday, along with the reservoir and the lines leading from one to the other. I have new grommets and the plastic fittings, but I thought that there were hose clamps on one end of the lines or the other, but I don't see any in mine. Does anyone know if there are clamps? It's a 1978 911SC.

I'm pretty sure my 88 had no clamps. At least when I worked on it. From the factory, who knows ...

There are no clamps on the fluid supply lines from the master reservoir to the master cylinder. It's just a push-on fit due to the barbed fittings on the reservoir and nipples that go into the master. The lines are not under pressure, so that's why there's no clamps. Even when they are under pressure (when using a pressure bleeder) they don't leak.
I think you're going to find the hoses a bear to separate from the master and reservoir. Be careful you don't break the nipples off the reservoir! Cut the hose if you need to and replace with new.

The short rubber lines from the reservoir to the hard plastic feed lines are no longer available. I have black cloth-covered 7 mm fuel line. Is that a good substitute? What is everyone else using?

I think you will need those short lines to properly mate up with the MC. On my 72, they were short steel tubes, flanged on one end to connect to the MC. The flanged end seated in the rubber grommet on the top of the MC. It was a bioch to get the tubes in the grommets and the grommets fully seated on the MC. I had to pull the MC from the car and mate up the tube/grommet on the bench as I couldn't do it while on the car. The other end simply pushed onto the plastic feeder line.
If I had damaged the tubes in this process, I think I could have fabricated a set from steel brake line. The real experts may have some better ideas. |
