Too much tire and not enough camber.....

I burnt my quarter pretty bad today on my '69, 7x16" Fuchs and 205 55's. The car is alligned great just not enough camber in the rear!! I put my 6x16's on for the time being, it's time for a little rear end upgrade. I'm thinking 26mm turbo t-bars, my adjustable spring plates, and a sway bar. I'm going to go get a quote tomorrow to see how much this is going to cost to get fixed.

What's your ride height and wheel offset or backspace?

FWIW I run the same wheel/tire combo on the same bodystyle as Kevin's. 25mm t-bars and a sway bar with 2.75 deg neg camber and a much lower ride height, no problems. I did go thru my paint burning phase getting there though. the type of tire can have a big influence too. I run goodyear eagles and they have a very rounded shoulder. hey Kevin, I think I know a bodyshop that can fix that up for you.

I dont think bump stops would have stoped this. I never measured the ride hight, but I'm pretty sure its set to Euro hight. A crude measurement of camber showed maybe 1 degree on the drivers side and just about nothing on the passenger side. The wheels werer 16x7 fuchs, and 205 55 tires, no problem with enough camber and a sway bar. Don, I'll probably swing by the shop tomorrow and get an estimate for this, I'll request that you do the work

A 16x7 has the wrong offset. Lots of info about what fits in the archives.

That's not burnt paint; it's cracked bondo.

I've been running 16x7's with Kumho Ecsta SPT's in 205/55-16 all the way around on my '72. My car is substantially lower that Euro ride height. I did manage to burn the paint on the right rear, but then cranked in another -1/2 degree camber and have had no trouble since. Rear camber is now -1 1/2 degrees; about as much as you can get with stock spring plates. No more clearance issues.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago w/ tires that weren't a problem for 3 years previously. Turned out to be a bad rear shock.

You can always flycut a quarter inch off of the back of the wheel if it is a 944 wheel. No camber adjustment needed.

Theres burnt paint on the quarter lips on both sides, the filler lifted off and cracked because the tire was rubbing on the inner quarter which caused it to heat up. I went for an estimate today, $1200 to fix both sides. I figured it would be somewhere around that. I might wait and just have the whole car painted silver, the estimate for that was about $4000.
