Need help with rear decklid shocks

I just installed a Carrera tail on my 1987. The original decklid only had one strut on the left side. One strut is clearly not adequate for the extra weight! I see a place to connect a second strut on the right side of the firewall but there is no place to hook it up to the right side hinge. Do I need a different (930?) hinge for the right side which included a mounting hole? I know the Turbos have a strut on the right side. Where do they attach it to the hinge???

Thanks

You definitely need a Turbo Arm or weld an attachment like the OEM. Strange thing is, it appears Porsche just welded a piece on to the OEM Arm, it looks totally different from the driver side.

Caution if you have a K&N Filter it may need to be cut down to accomodate the shock.

Alternative is to put a dual shock on the driver side alone, that will hold your new lid with tail up. Note, it may push up on the that side when closed.

You can attach the second strut at the hinge next to the first by using a spacer made of a length of aluminum tubing from any hardware store and a longer 6mm bolt. Cut the tubing the right length to keep the struts parallel.

I used to have a Turbo tail in my SC with one 600 N strut and no problems. I had to replace it with 230 N strut when I installed ducktail, because the stronger one pushed the lid so hard that it was inglined.

I did this last year. You need two struts on the left side with spacers, (washers in my case), as mentioned. If the car didn't come with the sport package, whaletail etc. then the folks in Germany did not weld the right side bracket on. I can take a pic if you need to see.

there was a thread on this last year. A bunch of guys posted their pics of home made hinges for their whale tale setups.

I did a post of my tail mod with pics too. I decided to buy a used hinge from a wrecking yard, and had it primered and painted along with the new decklid and tail. I then made a bracket and mounted the right side decklid strut. The decklid opens nice and square with a satisfying thunk.

I eventually welded it in, but the pop rivets work very well.

Although some say it's OK... I would NOT put dual shocks on the driver's side. It just stresses that one side of the lid too much and may give you problems in the long run. Lids won't line up square, hinge point is no longer as flush with the surrounding bodywork, etc...

If you need two...put one on each side.
