				question on wheels damage, fixable?

How come there is nothing I can get done perfect? Everything I touch lately was either broke, damage, or undone. I recently acquired a set of nice 3 pieces wheels. 2 of them were slightly bent and out of round, so I brought it to a repair shop. This shop was introduced by a very reputable shop, which many of us know and recommended. I was willing to wait for almost 2 weeks instead of taking it somewhere else and can get it done on the same day. Today, I brought the wheel home tested it. Guess what? It's still out of round. Before, the diameters on different angles would have around more than 1/2 inch different. Now, it's much better, but still have almost 1/4 of an inch different (maybe between 1/8 to 1/4). My question is if this is good enough for some agressive street driving or should I bring it back and ask for rework? Is it posible to fix un-rounded wheel to perfect point? Before I agreed with the repair, the person there said he will straighten the wheel to as new condition (physically). I don't want to spend time to swap wheels again and be late (or leave early) at work again, if it's not posible to make these wheels perfect. Thanks. Ok here is a pic to describe more detail of what I am talking about. What I did was putting the wheel on the car, have a pin right next to the point and spin the wheel. From outter lip, it's is ok, not rounded as new but the different is not a lot. On the inside edge of the half is where it is not rounded, maybe 1/8+ inch unrounded. Please look at the 2 red arrows. Here are some short movies. You might have to save the files to your computer to play. http://loveporsche.dynalias.com/Sales/Temp/MOV01067.MPG http://loveporsche.dynalias.com/Sales/Temp/MOV01069.MPG

If they are 3 piece wheels, just get a new inner or outer. I'm going through a similar problem as new wheels I bought for my turbo had some runout and I got a shimmy @ 50+. Unfortunately, the wheels are 1 piece and the manufacturer is taking a look at them right now.

Take the tire off and use a dial indicator to measure the run out. Industry standard for automakers is 40 thou or 1mm. Measure on the bead, not the lip, the lip does not matter at all. If run out is greater than this, get a new wheel half like others have suggested. Cheers

I am not sure if the tire is running true. I only pay attention to the wheel. Jeff, The runout on the bead is definitely still greater than 1mm. It is like 2 to 3 mm. I know you guys said "new half", but is there a chance that it can be repair? The shop said they can bend/shape it back to when it's new. Is this true? What I mean is if it worth to take it off and bring it back and wait again, or should I just forget about them because it can not be repair to perfect round? Thanks.

Look at the cost to repair bends. Where I live, it runs @ $100 to fix a bent wheel. I'm not sure if they charge more if there is more than 1 bend, but I would think so. A BBS half from Woodman Tire runs@ $100 for a used one and @ $180 for a new one. I think a new one is a better way to go.

Bryan, If a used but good condition (straight, round, true) costs almost 1/2 the new one, I would go for the used one. If I know I can get some good replacement for the same cost to repair, I would go for a used one. Do you know if bbs half would fit good into CCW wheel? All in all, do you know Woodman website address?

Here's Bob Woodman's site. http://www.bobwoodmantires.com/ Actually, I meant a new or used half would be a better way to go than, trying to fix a bent half. I don't think Woodman carries halves to fit the CCW as they deal in the BBS Motorsport wheels which are 20 bolt halves. You could try Kodiak wheels as they make halves for almost any application

Thanks Bryan. I didn't know replacing half price would be similar to repairing price. If I knew, I would already gone that route. Again, thanks.

Don't forget to get the torque specs when you rebuild your rim.
