o2 sensor
had a hesitation from 1k to 3k rpms then would smooth out from the post on this great site I thought I would disconnect the o2 sensor. when I did all symptoms went away and the engine purred. My ? is it harmfull to drive with o2 sensor undone intill I cann drop the 200$ on a new o2. Also is there a Cheaper sensor for this car 85 Carrera Targa 3.2

No harm is done with a disconnnected O2 sensor, however, go to your local auto parts store and get any 3 wire O2 sensor made by bosch and solder your old connector to it. This should run $30-70.

Hold on before you wreck your engine!
Your 85 3.2 has a DME-controlled fuel and emission system. The o2 sensor has a totally different and crucial role, compared to it's use in the 3.0 SC motors. I agree. Running without the 02 sensor will make your car run at the wrong mixture setting. Doing so may damage your CAT, which is expensive to replace. Your disconnection of the O2 sensor is probably countering something else that is wrong, and we all know that 2 wrongs don't equal a right! Make sure the O2 sensor is working and plugged in, and then tackle the 'real' problem...

what is the proper way to check the o2 sensor once I reconnect it? or do I have to take it to a wrench and put it on an exhaust gas analyzer to find out. all symtopms of previous hesitation and a little hunting of idle did go away once the sensor was diconnected. also can I get any 3 wire bosch o2 sensor and solder old connector to it?

I have lived through this one. Just go get the proper O2 sensor and get it in as soon as you can. I for one, would stay away from any universal models (others have their own thoughts). I replaced both the O2 and temp sens on my 3.2 and it made a great deal of difference through the entire RPM range. Dave |

I have the same rough running on my '85. Right at 2250 rpm it runs rough. Gets worse when the weather turns cold. Replaced O2 (factory part), head temp sensor, wires, cap, rotor, plugs, and DME relay. Had CO mixture adjusted. Still there. Any insights? Car has factory DME chip and is stock in all ways.

maybe throttle sensor or fuel pressure regulator. Although Iam not sure if cold would effect the fuel pressure regulator but I think @ higher rpms you need more fuel pressure and you might not be getting it.

I believe I heard on Rennlist specify to use the Factory O2 sensor. Something about a universal one not having an "air-space" and the porsche one does. Not at all sure though.

DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR O2 SENSOR ON ANY POST 84 911!!!
Doing this is only acceptable and beneficial on the K-Lambda CIS injection found on 80-83 US 911SC's. Your Pulsed Injection system (DME type) uses the O2 sensor as an IMPORTANT input in determining the proper mixture of fuel/air. This is not the case on the earlier CIS systems with O2 sensors. You should be able to test your sensor with a voltmeter. Specs should be in your Porsche repair manual...such as Bentley's. It should cycle rapidly Rich/Lean...Rich/Lean indicated by a cyclical climbing and dropping of the voltage reading. If someone has the Bosch part number for the Carrera, I can use my old contacts to find a cheaper replacement that has the same performance characteristics.

I'am taking it for an annual state inspection next week anyway, and we have emmissions test here in NC That should give me an idea on how well the o2 sensor is working and go from there thanks for all your help.
