30 mm socket needed

Is there anywhere on a 911 that requires a 30 mm socket?

Not a wrench, but a socket.

Thx - am adjusting tools & toolbox...

Funny that you should ask. I have one in my drawer here at my office. I had loaned it to a co-worker for the drain plug on his Jeep transfer case. Need to borrow it?

Yes,

A 30 mm socket is necessary for the rear axle nut.

A deep (to clear the speedometer drive) socket is necessary for the pinion stretch bolt on a 901 (911 & 914).

Best,
Grady

If you're making a 911 only box this doesn't really help, but for general large metric sockets I have: 20, 21, 22, 24, 27, 30, & 36mm

Thx - I don't need to borrow one, but am slowly accumulating odd sized (big) sockets when I see a cheap one on eBay.

Cool, then maybe the list will help. I believe that's every large socket I've needed to work on a metric car.

I've found that a 1-1/4" (31.75mm) socket is the best tool to remove old, corroded tie rods from steering racks. Forget the $30+ specialty open wrench... that doesn't work for mess. Start with tie rod hanging from steering rack (remove from strut). Simply take out the cotterpin holding the lengths of the old tie rod to the threaded ball attached to the rack. Put the 1-1/4" socket (attached to breaking bar) around the ball-end attached to the steering rack and twist away. Be sure you aren't torquing the rack too much (lots of penetrating oil helps). Of course, best method for not reusing old tie-rod, perfect for longhood to turbo rod conversions

A 32 mm socket (preferably 3/4" drive) is required for the Carrera rear axle nut.

So, that's 30 mm for 911 rear axle nuts, up to but not including the Carrera, which requires a 32 mm - with a lot of torque (hence the 3/4" drive).

Correct?
