Rebuilding 930 Calipers...

Howdy,

I'm in the process of going through my brakes. I have the two seals for each caliper cylinder. But how do you get the "scraper seal ring" out of the caliper. The scraper ring has a steel O.D. that might have corroded to the wall of the cylinder. The calipers are aluminum so you can't get rough with them. I've put some PB Blaster on them, but haven't tried heat.

I'm hoping someone has a better idea... Thanks.

David,

What is a seal puller? Is it a slide hammer?

Thanks,

You have to pop the pistons out first, then the seal puller that David posted can be used to leverage the scraper seal out.

It's usually a good idea to lay something like a piece of flat steel, like a screwdriver shaft or gasket scraper, under the seal remover where it will bear on the caliper body. This spreads out the load of the seal puller and avoids denting the caliper.

David,

I picked up a "seal puller/extractor", worked like a charm. I would have destroyed the calipers without this tool. I wished I had known about this tool when ordering the rest of my brake parts from PP...

What a web site, what a bunch of nice guys that share their knowledge... you've gotta love it. Makes owning the car a lot more fun.

Many thanks,

David,
Thanks for posting the seal removal tool. I just ordered one based upon your info and post.

Kevin,
I could definitely see putting some chaffing material under the fulcrum end of the puller to protect the caliper surface.

Thanks again fellas,
Paul

Paul,

I used a piece of 1/16" steel plate to rock the seal puller on. I also found that if you take the more pointed end of the seal remover and place it on the old scraper ring, then tap the handle with a light hammer to set the point, then gently pull on the handle and the seal will popped out unbelievably easy.

I first had tried a screw driver blade between the housing and the O.D. of the seal, it did not work plus I nicked up the caliper.

Utility Knife

All,

I struggled with this the first time.........solution I found is to use a utility knife, dig the tip of it into the seal, and pull the seal out of the channel - toward the back is ok, then just use your finger to work the seal out the rest of the way (once started, it's easy!). Clean up usually involves a SkotchBrite pad and 'elbow grease'.

But I have a question - when all is cleaned up and ready to go back together, what kind of silicone grease are you using on the seals? I've been using dielectric grease for years with no adverse effects, but I'm aware that there is a specific silicone grease available for this purpose. Any POVs?

Neil,

Were you discussing the removal of the lower sealing ring, not the outside scraper ring which has a metal outside band on it? And remember this is for the 930 calipers.

I have some brake cylinder assembly lube that has been on the shelf for years, I need to check it out before I use it.
