Short shift, New knob?

Hey there just want some other peoples in put. I'm putting a short shifter in my car. Should I use the old shift knob or get a new one?

Don't put in a short shifter, is my opinion.

Use the factory SC/RS based one if you do.

So far I haven't seen anything that I wanted more than the stock shift knob. I'm interested in hearing the choices that are available... I read a thread about knobs here sometime ago and one was mentioned that got my attention, it was a black titanium ball. However they were no longer available.

do a search on shift + knob - dozens have been posted - I posted a pic of 4 or 5 that I rotate thru

The stock knobs _are_ really cheap...

In general, IMHO a knob should be
Leather - feels the best (Alcantera, if you are an animal rights activist)
2nd choice wood - looks the best

metal, esp. Al, is the worst - it is cold cold cold in winter and hot in the summer. Who wants that? Of all the metals, Ti will have the least heat exchange problem - sortofa waste of Ti tho...

knob should have a good shape - you really need to feel it to be sure.

Aamco used to make some interesting ones - they can be had on Ebay or at swap meets

Momo is probably the king now - they have an extension selection.

The wood 917 repro was nice, but the guy couldn't make any $$ selling them -- you could make one on a lathe if you have even rudimentary skills tho

The SC has a factory SS in it. I like it a lot. I re-used my stock knob.

a few years ago, I put in a factory short shift kit, a Robotek shift kit, and a Momo shift knob. a few weeks ago, I just removed the Momo knob and the Robotek shift kit, and left the short shift kit in. i bought a reproduction '73 stock shift knob and restored the look back to original.

Why do you need a shortshift? Factory, or no, the length of the shifter's throw is not an issue with a 915 trans. There are so many worthwhile things you can spend your money on...

For me, the POS actually hacked down the OEM shifter making a "Shorter Shifter" and JB welded the reverse lock out. Idiot, she alwasy grind from 5th. I chose to go Factory SS and found OEM 5 SPeed Knob.It was reasonably priced at TRE.

I have a factory SS that originally had the stock knob. I changed to a titanium Rob Knob, because the stock knob made the SS shifter shift feel very notchy. The heavier knob made the shifter shift feel smoother and more substantial. The Rob knob is made for BMW's.
