Glaze
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209130320.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209130371.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209130404.jpg Will post complete car when finished 3000 compound and final glaze can be used on existing finishes. Use compound sparingly, as you are removing clear coat; you're trying to remove "dead" coating. Follow with glaze or a good wax. OK to wax existing paint when finished. Wait for 4-6 weeks to wax new paint finish to allow time for final cure. Glaze shown here is not a wax. Estimated cost of this type of paint job--$7000-$10,000....................... including materials of ~$1600. Somes estimates may be as low as ~$3,000 by someone not knowing what's involved in doing it right. Once into the job, labor costs go way up due to disassembly and reassembly, and corners (shortcuts) most likely taken to try to recoup loss. Your cost will vary of course depending on labor costs in your area--it's all about hours spent; costs can be lowered for this level of quality by liberal application of sweat equity. If you are doing a driver, and your main interest is corrosion control, I would not go to the extent that we've done here. Get out the masking tape and tape it up rather than adding all the labor costs--just understand that the quality of the paint job will be less. The good thing about doing it that way is that you're not as reluctant to drive the car the way they were intended to be driven. Me? I'm gonna drive it and take the dings as they come.............................. More pics later. |
boy... this was fast... excuse my not knowing, but, was this a quickie paint job or is this what it takes ~ the way body shops do a respray paint job?
I am tempted to give this a whirl depending on your response...can you please break out the time and costs so I can consider further the plunge...for example: 1. time to tape plastic sheets to shop walls...? 2. time to strip exterior parts off of car...? 3. time to tape/paper off car...? 4. time to prep surface... please list by task & time to do them...? 5. time to paint primer...? 6. time to paint ... all the layers of what ever you used also, cost for materials please... Thanks and I must say you make it look sooooooooooo easy... I see another slippery slope in front of me... Bob |
project plan
I'll add a project plan tracking this job. The timing may appear to be short; we've been at this for over 2 weeks nonstop.
This was done the way a higher quality paint job would be done, probably better than a paint shop, due to the time and attention to detail. A commercial shop is all about time spent on the job (time is money). So, again, the more grunt work you can do, the better job you'll get. JD it could have been a very slippery slope........................................ I couldn't have done it myself without Monty Smith's help. I was essentially his gopher, and he the master.........this guy is the consumate professional who cares about the quality of his work ..................... We figured time as follows (details later) body work to fix dents/dings: 14 hrs disassembly and paint prep: so far, ~60 hrs oh, yes, this guy lives on coffee--so far, about 40 gals coffee....................... |
I guess I'm confused. I thought Brorag was in Oregon, are you? Or home in NC? If you're camped in OR and building a garage in trade for the work, that's a great story. Better than if you were doing it at home.
You say you're gonna drive it and take the dings as the come? Jeez, at least get a clear sheet on the front. That thing is gorgeous. |
Milt, Cindy booted them out of my garage last summer..:D

the low down
I did the trip with RoninLB this time last year; we put 11,000 mi on our cars in 6weeks. We were out in Oregun when some of the shanannigans were happening, but home is in Western NC.
Ron drove to my place in WNC, then we went west from here on I-40............ I hear you about the paint--gotta come up with a way to use the car without beating up the paint too much. jd |
how to keep paint out of the cracks
We used a 3M material in all the gaps, such as doors, boot, and engine compartment. It has an adhesive on ~ 1/3 of its diameter, and sticks in the space so it stays positioned when you close the doors, ect.
It allows a smoother transition between old and new paint............ http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209144232.jpg it fits like this: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209144307.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209144350.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209144414.jpg |

reassembly.............
We underestimated the time it would take to put this thing back together--double all estimates on the project plan.
The front end was a bit of a struggle. Apparently, the krouts planned one sequence of assy for most of this stuff and that's the only way you vill do it, und you vill like it! We must have assy and unassy'd that sucker at least 2X........... The rest, so far, is going OK, just slower than we figured. Pixs below: everything bagged and tagged--still a mess sorting stuff out later. Err to the side of too much notation when doing the disassembly: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209253622.jpg front valence assy with rubber strip http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209262445.jpg |

He's staying close to the nest and the female is in the nest chewing him out! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209254197.jpg this came in handy all day...... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209254310.jpg |

Wheels, whale tail
taking wheels and repainting, one side at a time.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209651299.jpg reattaching the whale tail and a/c condenser first time; note the classy stick holding up the deck lid http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209650778.jpg tail installed first time. Repaired cracks on either front side, which caused bad fit; removed, repaired, and repainted. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209650870.jpg front valence on--fog light on wrong side--gotta switch http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209651007.jpg corrected tail, repainted, ready for refit http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209651072.jpg |

finishing up
this takes lots of time and patience--if you get in a hurry here, you'll put scratches in the new paint.
When you get frustrated or tired (and you will), it's time to walk away and come back later. final polish........... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209754103.jpg this was my previous ARDVAD.....(anti-rapid downwardly vertical accelleration device), consisting of a free-from-the-boss busted adjustable mop handle. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209754367.jpg of course, nothings good enough for the wee beastie, so I went and bought one of Waynes $40.00 carbon fiber sticks, and sleep much better at night, comfort in the knowledge that I'm keeping Bush's economy from going into a "temporary dip".................. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209754230.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209754720.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209754742.jpg more shots of final buff with the glaze stuff in the pic......... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209754803.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209754826.jpg |
