Left NY May3, 2007 in rain.
Headed south to NC and then headed west. Got as far as Arizona then headed north to Hy2. At Hy2 I head east. Hy2 runs east from Idaho to Great Lakes just under Canadian border. It's a great road to x-country with. June 11 heading east on Hy2 in Montana. I’m just under Glacier National Park in slight rain and heavy overcast sky. Glacier is closed because of mud slides. Just south of Hy2 near Glacier is another National Forest. At a town called Hungry Horse I head south on a forestry dirt road for about 10 miles to a campground called Lost Johnny Point CG. The campground is a 150 foot dirt road with 5 primitive campgrounds. The place is empty because it’s Sunday night, raining, temp is 40F, and windy. Weather sucks. I take site closest to lake under trees. The next morning I hike around for a few hours and take some pictures before heading out. Picture 1 is Hy2 around Glacier Nat’l Park in Montana. It’s a fast 2 lane with mostly local drivers except for some off season Glacier tourists. This pic area is about 100 miles west of the Continental Divide, ie: foothills west side of Rockys. Hy2 speed limit is 70-75 mph limit. Cops allow limit + 10, no problem. The whole strip of Hy2 similar from Idaho to the Great Lakes area. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208748748.jpg Pic 2 is a Grizzly sign along dirt road a short walk from my camp. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208748883.jpg Pic 3, 4 is looking at my car under trees. I’m camped just a few yards to the left of arrow. Arrow points to my car. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208748972.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208749101.jpg Pic 5 is from campground looking across lake with morning sun and car pulled out to put it into pic. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208749650.jpg |
Lost Johnny Point CG
can't believe you did all that just to find a campground named Lost Johnny........................
it's perfect........... JD |
next, wet sand the paint
We sprayed two coats of base and two coats of clear, and air dried for 2 days. We're now wet sanding with 1200 grit.
The paint film is running between 9-12 ml, with heavier spots where the body work was done. The Glasurit paint tech said the coat thickness should run between 8-9 ml. Some people have put as much as 14 ml, but that risks cracking the clearcoat. We described to him our process, and told him we would likely end up with 9-12 ml; he said that was fine, given that we we're doing a final 1800 grit wet sand and then polishing. |

Next, final clear coat,
wet sand with 1800 grit, then 3000 grit, then polish/buff/glaze |
you have a body shop thread going on and contaminating this nostalgia thread.

the good ol' days
ain't life tough.
So, you're turning into an old fart, thinking of the good ol' days? Or, are you coming down so's we can go and play? Get your priorities straight! Bring your old lady too, so's I can give her a hug for putting up with you............................. jd |
my car needs work

last coat of clear
Backed car out of paint booth--now to finer sanding, buffing, and glazing so we can start getting this thing shiny. Will now start on all the pieces removed before, like bumpers, etc. Details on other thread............
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208874803.jpg Interior next; --now in-work by John Hacker at Original fit Interior in Oregon; to be shipped by end of this week. --seats stay parchment, all interior except dash goes to parchment leather. --Carpet changed from parchment to 1000 Series (Cutpile) Premiun Grade Material (CP-ESSEX-1060) dark brown which is 50% more dense than standard. --Couldn't keep white carpet clean. Some of my closer friends(?) have suggested that, given my advanced state of decrepitude, I should seriously consider incorporating one of these geriatric lifting seats into the interior design; it would definately make one of the fastest moterized wheelchairs in the area! Opinions? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208879483.jpg |
I didn't leave the engine out..................
The first thing I did to this car was to get the engine running correctly.
The wee beastie's engine was really sick by the time I got home from the X-country trip. It was blowing oil past the valve guides big time, and clogging up the rings badly. After a long run at speed, it seemed to run better, but would start again as soon as I went to low speed. I deliberately waited till it was over so if I messed the car up on the trip, it wouldn't be catastrophic. Needless to say, I watched the engine closely. If you guys remember, it developed a surging problen. After the fix below, it idled steady as a rock. Dave at speedwerks thinks it was all that air/oil coming in fron the valve guides that was confusing the air sensor. I took it to Dave Brown at Speedwerks and asked him to make it well. I asked what to do to give it a little extra pep, and he suggested a less restrictive exhaust system and a chip--I agreed. It took:
It definately hauls the freight now............and the sound! It's not loud, it's just "throaty"................................ Since this is a Cab, the BHTP (Big Honkin Tail Pipe) is plugged directly in my left ear. I went and got some earplugs to civilize it somewhat. Love that sound! He took a cutting torch to new $900 sport muffler and worked on the baffles to allow it to breath easier........... I'll try to get a sound bite up on this thread later......................http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208900504.jpg |
