reassy redux
outer door hardware installed.
windows reinstalled window gaskets and whiskers replaced electrical mirrors re-installed we first disassyd the drivers side flag mirror--the wiring harness has a plug in the mirror housing, but the 1/2 plug closest to the body will not pass through the passage to the door. Porsche has a special tool, ~$90, which I refused to buy, that removes the plug pins, so I cut the wires and crimped them back. On the passenger side, we taped the mirror and painted w/o disassy. looks ok. we refinished the wheels. Repainted the center back to the original nougat brown--same as car. the outer part of the rim is the matte white metal, with an original coating of some sort. The clear coat would not stay on athe outer portion of the wheel without running, so we left that part of the wheels--just cleaned them up--came out nice lights reinstalled--all nonworking bulbs changed. will re-coat the interior of the back light assy soon with rustolium chrome paint and change all old bulbs. whale tail back together and installed. I'm having a heck of a time finding the gaskets that fit under the heated windshield washer nozzles. The only reference I've found is in the shop manual; can't seen to find them anywhere, Would appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction there. seems like every day I'm coming up with more seals/gaskets needed that I forgot. I'll need to order the seal that fits between the vent window and the door skin next. pics later................. I'm beat--getting too old for this ****...............$8,000/$10,000 for a paint job is starting to look cheap.................... time for a martini............attitude adjustment time |

I'm trying to sort out how to re-run the wire for the door switch for the interior light. (see above dash shot--got the heater motor loosened) Any hints? Thinking of using a magnetic switch instead, like those used in home security systems. I'd mount the switch to the interior side, and a magnet in the door opposite it. when the door opens, the switch closes and suprise! Lights. Details later--only concern is amp capacity--I'll give it a shot and report here. |
Interior
The carpet set arrived from John at Original Fit Interior. The door panels and seat stuff are due within a week.
He did a good job on the carpet set--I had found some Essex extra plush carpet at another source and shipped it to him--he did up the carpet set from that. Its dark brown and I have a bunch left if anyone wants it. Seats and door panels will remain the original parchment leather. the hardest part of the interior job was starting. I was concerned about:
It wasn't that big a deal--must have put 10X more time worrying than it took to remove.
here are the pics: cover the new paint and lay the old stuff out the way it went in the car http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245658.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245682.jpg the rear seat bottoms are cushions that are glued down the the metal or heat/sound pad. there is no backing on the cushions, and all you do is reach between the rear end of the cushion and carpet and slowly, carefully separate the cushion from the carpet. The cushion filling will tear loose, and you can distort the cushion if you're not careful, so take your time. It's not as hard as it sounds, so just do it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245720.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245748.jpg Half way through the disassy process; http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245777.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245798.jpg Seat removal is slow-- use the right hex wrench and don't let it slip. The seatbelt wire has a small connector, so you don't have to remove the seabelt from the seat, but since I'm sending the seat out to get re-skinned, I took center belts off and bagged them. the outer belts stay with the car oon the winder: make sure they are positions so they don't scratch your paint. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245826.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245856.jpg Drivers seat out: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245889.jpg heater control console out; there is a connector to the heat fan switch that is protected by a light grey piece of cardboard (it's peeking from under the console in the pic) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212245928.jpg |
install carpet set
Started putting carpet in yesterday.
It also takes longer than you estimate; make sure you have the install sequence right--some panels overlap others get the right glue--the contact cement I used comes out stringy and in a pattern that is easily directed; a good thing, since this stuff is really sticky. Spray on both surfaces and let it set 1-2 minutes. It's forgiving, so you can reposition the carpet panel till you get it right. Make sure you keep this stuff off the carpet that will show, but on the carpet that will be covered by the panel you are installing. The wax and grease solvent used while painting appears to remove the glue without harming the carpet. organized chaos: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212420933.jpg contact cement--plan on four cans @ ~$7.00 ea. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212420962.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212420986.jpg The console is easy, once you screw up the courage to take a pair of pliers to it. it consists of 2 plastic pieces that are stapled together. You attach the top portion first, staple the two pieces of plastic together, then pull the covering down and around the outer portion. Then lap underneath and glue the loose end. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212421009.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212421031.jpg |
I take it this means the car will never haul firewood again???;)

Ron, is that cyl head temp gauge really $2K? |
[QUOTE=Brorag;3980555]
yo! I'm doin all this for Ronnie ------------- One night I say to John, that because I wake at daybreak and hike around anyway, I'll gather firewood from up the river and we'll put it in his 911. John has a convert that's easy to load instead of my coupe. It's too far a hike and too heavy to carry back. It'll be easy in his car. We're loaded and John starts laughing and says ok because he thought it was just bs. I wake him around 8am, he's pissed and groggy. He likes his 9 hours of sleep. "What did you do?" "Are you serious?" "You agreed last night. I awoke and started gathering wood." "-uck" HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ----------- ok.. it was our birthday of the scene. I'm bringing a video next ride because some things have to be seen to be believed. Ron, is that cyl head temp gauge really $2K? ------------- Nope more like $2,500+ and over 20 hours for install. Final adjustment
Speedwerks here in NC redid the motor.
The new exhaust system was too loud for me. Speedwerks does racing porsches, so originally installed a gutted new muffler w/3.5" dia exhaust pipe and SSI headers. Had migraine after 20 miles. Teens loved it, wife and neighbors hated it. kept SSI headers, and changed to M&K 2-in/1-out--works/sounds great. |
