Help needed with NEW Alternator-Valeo wiring hookup

Hey Pelicaners,

I have a 1974 911 Carrera.

After two Bosch Alternator rebuild failures, I finallly bought a brand new Valeo alternator (made in Poland with French Facon bits on it), it's 55 amp unit.

I am replacing the old alternator with the external regulator with this one, which has an internal regulator.

I need some advice with the coded wires, where they supposed to hook up on the new alternator.

I know that I will no longer need the black wire from the external regulator. Also, the B+ (red wire ) is clearly marked where it is supposed to go. That leaves the ground (Brown) and the Blue.

There is a spade connector on the alternator, is that for the Blue wire?

And where does the ground connect to the new Valeo alternator?

Any help would relly be appreciated!!!

Wish I could help, but I wired my new alternator wrong and had to have it rewired by someone else. Good luck. Cheers, Mike.

Peppi and M_Wuebben,

Thanks for your input, Peppi your 88 Alternator appears slightly different from this brand new unit. I have a rectangle Facon little box on this alternator, with numbers and a green wire coming out of it, it is permanently wired to the bottom part of the unit...

It's too bad that , if they had put nuts on the places where one need to attach the Ground wire(s), it would have been self-explanetory... somewhat anyway!

I'll just keep monitoring this thread and see what happens!

Still cold and snowy!

Valeo Wiring...........

I just did this swap on my '80 SC. The red wire goes to the terminal marked with the "+", all brown wires go to the "-" terminal and the blue wire goes to the terminal marked +61 (I think), the terminal at the top. Tape off the black wire and tuck it out of the way. Then remove the external voltage regulator.
Hope this helps.

Fred,

Thanks for your valuable input! Unfortunately neither the "-" terminal nor the +61 terminal is marked on the alternator... One terminal has a "spade" connector, can that be the +61for the "Blue" wire?

Cheers from "up here",

T.G.

I've just reconnected my alt. on my 88 and wanted to confirm what I see it his pic. Are both brown wires (one thin one from the loom and one heavy one from the case perimeter bolt) are both hooked up to the "3rd" threaded bolt on the back of the alt. I marked mine but only seem to be able to see the marks I made for the blue line and the heavy bundle of red wires. The next to last pic above seems to show both of the brown wires on the 3rd bolt....correct?

Alternator hookup

I think DTW with his "Link" to another posting above, gives you the best answer! Niclely shown with pictures.

Be careful not to loose one of those little nuts in the back of the Alternator, I dropped one, could not find it fished and fished for it with a magnet. Eventually I gave up, found a new nut and .... well the Alternator did not work upon installation, now what? I took it to my Porsche shop... the little nut had fallen so that the alternator shorted-out... the lesson here, be super careful with your nuts ( I know, I know :-)

Cheers,

T.G

I dropped a tiny washer and spent 30 minutes looking for it since I was not totally positive where it went...what a PITA.
Anyway, it looks like the alt. in DTW' thread is slightly different that the one pictured above for an '88. Specifically, it looks like the terminals for the large red cables and the brownish ground cables are on opposite sides of the alternator, when viewed from behind, i.e. from the firewall of the engine bay. I've hooked my 88 up to match the pic above and noted that the threaded bolts/terminals are all three of a different size and I matched the little original cicular connectors on the closest bolt in size so I'm prettu sure it's correct. I was trying to confirm that both of the brown wires hook up to the same spot since I read somewhere else that some were attaching the heavier wire from the perimeter bolt to somewhere on the housing. Per the above pic, they both are bolted to the same bolt.
Thanks

Valeo 101822 alternator hook up

I have an early '72 911T. Orig Bosch went south so I bought a Valeo 101822 which was an identical fit (long story here). Reading the previous thread on hook ups, and looking at the back of the Alternator straight on, I hooked the Large Red wire to the B+ at the 9:00 position; the brown ground wire to the lug at the 3:00 position: the blue wire from the wiring harness to the lug at the 6:00 position; and the black wire with the spade connector I just taped off. Started the engine and the red alternator light stayed on! Reving engine to 2000 rpm DC voltage at the battery was 11.65V. Switching to AC on the multimeter I only had .05 AC volts which told me the diodes were good. Should I switch the blue lead with the black spade connector? Leave the blue lead alone and plug in the black lead onto the spade connector? Cheesh! Has anybody else run into this problem with a '71 harness because it is not following the '72 routine and mine is more like a '71 than a '72
Desparate!

Solved it!

Didn't get much help here so I took the Valeo Alternator to a rebuild shop for testing. Using the standard hook up as recommended by several on this thread: Red to B+(9:00); Brown (3:00); and Blue (DF) @ 6:00. It worked fine on his testing machine. Reinstalled it and dash idiot light still on no matter what the rpm. Pulled the dash light out and inspected it - it was an LED light!. Replaced with incandescent type bulb and everything worked as it should. It was odd because the LED light had worked with my stock Bosch Alternator and external regulator. With the Valeo 101822 Alternator with internal regulator the LED would not go out under any rpm.
Hope this helps the next guy
