Hi all,
I'm still removing parts from my car ('72 911) so I can strip then paint it. I've come across a couple of things that I'm having trouble removing from the dash. I'd be interested if anybody has the tricks for removing them. I can't figure out how to remove: 1) the ignition switch. I removed the front cover by unscrewing it, but I can't figure out how it is fastened to the back of the dash. 2) the rectangular panel that has the heater controls in it. 3) the little dial that is used to reset the trip odometer. 4) the dash front trim pieces (there aren't any fasteners that I can find...) Everything else is removed from that area, so there is nothing to get in the way. Thanks, Charlie |

Hi Charlie,
Ignition Switch - Remove the 2 screws on dash face and one on steering column which you can get at below the dash. Heater Control Panel - Remove bolt from the back of the unit. Get at that below the dash. Trip Odometer Dial - Don't know Dash Trim Pieces - Attached using double sided tape. Carefully pry. Note: Be careful to disconnect the various electrical connections from the ignition switch and heater control. It's all connected through plugs and you should not need to cut any wires. I believe the screws on the ignition switch have to be drilled out. I'm not sure when Porsche started that practice as a theft deterrant but if the screws don't have slots for removal then I'd guess that's what you'll have to do. New screws are available with snap off extensions for when you replace the switch.

Hello
The switch has two screws and two rivets hold the plate. Screws can be reversed by good vice grips or reverse Hammering via a tangential forcing chissel. Inner clamp bolt is Allen 8 mm and countered with a M8 nut ( 13 mmm ). You have to insert and turn the key to fiddle the thing out. Trip Odoreset: There is a very small screw sideways in the knob, unscrew and the knob comes off. Then you will see the look nut with two oppesite holes or slots. Very similar to the other knobs just finer. Switch bezels: Use a larger needle nose securing ring vice. Slots: usa a big washer with ca. 20 mm OD and if the rod is in the way then make a cutout in the washer. Grüsse |

If you can get a piece of dental floss behind the trim pieces attached with dbl sided tape, you can "saw" them free (be patient...it takes a bit).

You have two sets of shear bolts to deal with the first set attach the lock plate to the dash and the second set attach the upper stearing shaft to the lower dash.
The shear bolts are designed to break the heads off when tightened. I tried everything to get them out without drilling...with no luck. Eventually, I ended up drilling a hole in the center and using an ez-out to back the bolts out. This way, I didn't destroy anything and can simply replace the shear bolts when I install the parts again. Be careful, the ignition switch can be expensive if you mess it up. let me know if you would like pictures or more details. Good luck David |
