Favorite non-OEM Seats?

Hi,
Just wanted to see what everyone has been happy with. I love the OEM "Tombstones," but they are hard to find and wanted to see what alternatives look good in the 1980's cars. My personal favorite are the Recaro Rallye II style, but I'm starting to get tired of the backdating kool-aid. Thanks.

Recaro lsc or lxc are my choice for lightweight, very comfortable and reasonably priced, period correct. I've had them in several 911's they always look just right and are very comfortable even on verrry long drives.

If you like the OEM seats, you might look for used seats out of Boxster. They are similar and easier to find. I have a set in my '75 and they look mostly correct.

I have the recaro sportster cs, love them. Easy fit, bolted right on with recaro rail kit.

Years ago, I got a pair of seats from an early BMW 320is. I had them done with houndstooth inserts and electric seat warmers. Most comfortable seats I've owned.

Hate to say this but it's all about comfort, not looks. Assuming that is that you sit in your car for more than 1/2 hour at a time. I have a hard Cobra race seat which is astonishingly comfortable for hours at a time. Stock seats had me getting out of the car every hour to stretch. If you just buy what looks nice you may be very unhappy.

Had a pair of SRDs and they provided great lateral support but killed my bony @$$ on long drives. Hopefully they are kinder to you.

I'll be going with seats from D'eser in Torino Italy. The Sport S is an exact Recaro sport seat replica. I traveled to Torino just to visit the D'eser shop-- lovely husband and wife team and everything is handmade. I test-sat in a Sport S seat and it was really nice, they had lots of different materials to choose from too. Ferarri leather was my fave.

If you want period correct, check out the GranTurismo by classiccarseats.com. If period-correct is not a priority, Recaro Sportster CS seats are the best seats I have ever sat in. Period. Worth every penny.

I bought this Recaro Topline from a Pelican, it was "as new". He only had the drivers seat though, drat! The passenger just has to do with the standard 8 way electric seat.
I just love this seat. It is a heated and cooled seat. Electric recline and height adjustment. Manual fore-aft, lumbar and extendable knee bolster. The leather is just sumptuous!

Be aware though that back in the 1980's time frame Recaro offered similar-looking seats on the VW GTi & GLi (IIRC) which were of lower quality and built to accommodate wider drivers.

More than most easily-swapped parts in a car, the seat is very dependent on the individual driver's body (particularly back). For my money, the Recaro SRD is the most comfortable seat period, from short daily driven trips, to 1k+ mile road trips. They barely fit in a 911 though, and I prefer fixed-backs in a sporty 911. The Pole Position is pretty perfect if the harness holes weren't so low, and the Sparco Evo is a close second (what I have in my car, now).

I've owned several 80s GTIs and GLIs and can say that the Recaro Trophy model seats used in them are hands down my favorite seats in any car. As far as width and quality goes you may he thinking of the Scirocco S2 seats that people commonly call Recaro Trophy seats (which are LS models) but are in fact completely different. The scirocco seats and later corrado seats which are similar are much wider with less bolstering and much poorer quality. The legitimate Recaro Trophy seats (again, LS seats just covered differently) are fantastic. I personally prefer the earlier versions of them from the 87-88 cars, the bolsters were slight larger (on a width side note, the trophy seas are tight on me even and im all of 5'6 160lbs... Not a big person at all) compared to the late 89-92 seats which had the 2 part buckle system attached to them personally however I wouldn't use either in my 911, the squared shoulder area of the backrest just doesn't fit the cabin shape in my eyes. I would go with a sparco or recaro aftermarket seat that has a more rounded profile with the crowned style 1 piece headrest/backrest area. They look the best inside the cabin. I've never owned either brand in that style but the sparco idems that were in a friends old chevelle project were very comfortable. My .02
