![]() ![]() Spendy. But in the words of a local ex-962 mechanic "It's the right way to do it" $$$ 695.00 for my 993 engine

That looks very similar to the factory setup on the 964/993 RSR. Except the Porsche racing parts are probably alot more expensive.

Heres the setup I built to put AC on my 2.4. I used the pulleys from Clewett engineering. Its going in a 914/6 so I can't use the factory compressor mounts (Too tall and on the wrong side). Should make changing the belt much easier too.
![]() Thought you would get a kick out of this considering it could be used on a 911 too.

On the later cars, I think the fan and the alternator run different belts and different speeds.pics anyone?

Very nice. Both setups, that is. I was just reading about the Clewett last night in Wayne's rebuild book. Seems like you would be running less pressure on the belt resulting in less wear on the alt bearing. At any rate, the pressure is constant over the life of the belt and you don't ahve to worry about it slipping and losing cooling.
Craig, you say spendy, but the purple gizmo on the left ain't cheap! ![]() ![]() |

At ~$700 a pop no thanks
![]() some but not all RSRs used them, here is a factory RSR version, ![]()

Given the belt and tensioner dimentions, I wonder if emachineshop or somewhere similar could whip up a few pullys and bracket for less. I'll post specs if I ever do it.

This would be great if:
- the top pulley was much smaller to gain some increased cooling effect ( but with a parasitic hp increase). Our cars don't spend 90+% of the time at top (RPM) speed and could use the extra cooling all the time. Fair trade off, I would say. - multi-rib V-belt allows very tight radius...therefore very small pulley can work. - generic Ford/other belt tensioner can be rigged/fabbed. This Clewett price is way over the top....we should be able to make something like this for $100. Where's Chuck ? Polybronze fan pulleys!...let's go !! Wil

You could adapt one from any number of detroit cars or aftermarket musclecar catalogs waaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than the purchase price of the Clewett item.
example: ![]() I love Clewett's stuff, but you can always do it cheaper youself. |

I was astounded at the cost - I saw the parts, held 'em in hand etc.
I might do it for $350...but at about double that price....well, maybe some day I'll get this $$$.$$ functional trinket - Yeah, Zeke, that pruple box costs the price of a small car ;-)

Granted, belt slippage is potentially reduced what with greater surface area between belt and pulleys, but do 911s suffer greatly from belt slippage? If so, perhaps a smaller fan pulley isn't really necessary when all one has to do is provide better pulley grip with a similar system that drives the fan more efficiently.
Perhaps someone with a rotational tachometer could track and record the fan pulley speed relative to engine speed, then calculate the difference between theoretical and actual fan pulley speed. That sound right? Sherwood |

I like the design because it allows for less belt tension at all rpms which equals longer alternator bearing life, mabye a toothed belt does it even better.
Plus if you want to go nuts with a audio system and run a seperate dedicated alternator....

Who says the alternator has to run the same speed as the fan? Why not separate the two and use an appropriately-sized pulley for each, serpentine belt drive or otherwise? Running a separate alternator allows using a unit that's lighter, more efficient, more readily available and/or less expensive.
Sanden made money selling A/C compressors that replaced the older, less efficient and heavier York compressor. I'm sure an equivalent bearing can be retrofitted to support the fan. Sherwood |

This is the engine from the winner of the 2002 and 2003 GTP cup. A serpentine belt kit looks nice but that,s it i guess. It,s for sale btw for 27.500 euro,s completly rebuilded.

Less wear and tear on alternator bearings? Come on. How many alternator rebuilds can you get for $700.00? My last one cost me $100.00 on a 20 year old alternator. You do the math.

As some one so elegantly replied in another thread about shift couplers....it doesnt seem like a $750 problem. I like the idea of modifying some domestic stuff, I guess the pulleys would need to be custom machined.

A 993 has 2 belts and two sets of pulleys .... and not enough tools in the tool kit to change the belts on the side of the road. ( unlike earlier 911s ).
So, one of the biggest advantages of the Clewett serpentine system is a very quick and easy belt change. Fumbling around with two belts and a bunch of shims in the dark, even if you had enough tools with you, wouldn't be much fun. Most often a broken belt on a 993 means a tow truck ![]()
