Small Bulb on H4
Hey all,
I've tried to search the forum, but the tool doesn't like H4 as a subject - or part of the subject -- so forgive my redundency. I am reinstalling my H4s and have a question, the small bulb on the H4 aren't wired up to anything, I don't have a wire to hook up either. What do I wire them up to? how do I do it and make it look decent too? Thanks, Jeff

However...you can run a wire up from your parking lights (as I did) so that youe "city light" bulb will light when your parking lights are on.

Yes. My Land Rover Discovery had City Lights that came on with the parking lights.
Use the same wattage bulb that's in the existing parking lights (forget what it is). Run wires to the small CL bulbs. |

My Rover had that too, now to think of it; running a wire from the parking lites is the only way? Why build it if it wasn't going to be used? Oh well - will run a wire and see how it looks.
Thanks all! JMc

Well, you could run wires from the light switch.
If you're concerned about appearance, you can run the wires from the pkg lites to the city lights behind the bumper and inside the fender. You don't have to run them on the outside of the fender/bumper where they're visible. ![]() Trying to be funny here... |

The answer lies in the difference in the lighting laws from country to country. The USA cars didn't get city lights, or H4 lights. Anyway, the wiring is easy. There is already a connector in the headlight bucket for the turn signal and side marker lights. You can tie into the circuit there, without having to run a new wire from the bumper into the headlight bucket. JR |

You don't have to run a wire down to the parking lights... the wire going to them is already in the headlight bucket and exposed where it goes into one of those clear plastic spade connector plugs.
Use a testlight with the sharp probe to find which wire it is... or take the lense off the parking light and look at the color of the wire and you'll see it up above in the bucket already. Lots easier and safer to splice into it and a ground wire there. Or make your own ground wire and attach it somewhere like one of the H5 mounting screw points in the bucket on an'87 or later. Different years will probably be different but I think it was a black wire with a white stripe on an '87 for the parking lights. |

I've read that City Lights weren't/aren't legal in the US, but Land Rovers have had them for well over a decade (sold in the US).
Maybe it's just that the H4 lights were not legal, at least in the '80's. |

The part number is N0177172. Do a search on the part number and it will come up. It's a 4 watt bulb.
