Upgrade questions?
just joined the 911 family finally. Ive been a vdub guy for man years and have had 1 944.
Nothing special, but a good deal none the less. 77 911 sunroof, RSR doors panels, steel flares. Int. is in great codition, Paint is in good condition. 110k. Runs great. Paid 4,000.00 My question is knowing little about 911's Id like to do some upgrades, but honestly dont really know where to start. Any suggestions as far as hp's or performance, and ext. for looks. Newer bumpers, intercange capability of newer parts, ect... would be appreciated. Is there much to do to a 2.7 to gain power, or should i start lookin for a bigger motor? Thanks in advance. You don't say where you are located.
Make sure you no longer have the 5 blade cooling fan - change to 11 blade if you do. Do a search. Check to see if the thermal reactors have been removed (may or may not be able to in some locations -emissions). |

smog regs may limit what you can do to get more hp from that engine. dropping in a complete 3.2L or even a 3.6L will LOWER EMISSIONS and turn the car into a fire-breathing rocket at the same time.
your budget & mechanical wrench-turning ability is critical to any changes the very first thing to do is to make sure the motor (if you keep it) has been properly upgraded - not for more hp - but so it can continue to make any hp at all w/o coming apart, which the 2.7L motors tend to do... Here is a list of things to do to make the car feel new again: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/189572-long-term-commonly-neglected-maintenance-post2955054.html#post2955054 It should keep you busy for a while. |

Sounds like a deal.
Enjoy it for a while and decide on your budget and goals. Are you a daily driver, GT cruiser, wash and shine, track junkie etc. The basics are the fan as noted, consider carrera tensioners, new brake lines and fluid, think of tires if old, and check rear arm to see torsion tube is somewhat centered or if bushings need replacement. Do you still have the smog exhaust on it. That might be a first place to start. Is it an S or Normal motor? If you are going to AutoX or track it, note that many organizations have rules that if you do the wrong mod, you will end up in a class with much faster cars on accident. A well set up early 911 can be a great track car. Especially for a beginner. Maintenance first, toys second. |

Budget and wrenching capability isn't much of an issue. Just lack of knowledge on where to start. Thanks for the link.

AutoX and weekend cruisin is the plan. I know the rear swaybar links are wore out, not sure on exhaust. I like the idea of doin a 3.6 swap, but dont want to change my 4k runnin car to 10-12k car right off the bat. haha. I appreciate all the tips.

The motor fan shroud color may tell you. I do not remember the colors.
My best guess is the normal is black, and the S is red but I could be wrong. On the vin, the last 4 numbers determine the number of the car built. That is, 0123 is the 123rd car. The number just before that is the engin code. if it is a 1 it is a normal, if it is a 3, it is an S, a 4 would be a euro Carrera with the 2.7 RS motor. The S is 175 hp and has magnesium case and transmission with the lower geared diff. Sport muffler is the ez addition, can just mod your for very little money. C2 grind cams could be added by not worth the effort. Carbs wake it up.... I good car and potentially as fast as a SC in the right hands. |

hello and welcome
![]() first thing is basic maintennance ie oil and filter change, check suspension bushes (the rubber ones perish), check shocks, check sway bar mounts (they crack) check brake pads & fluid (maybe change to higher temp ones) apart from backdating the exhaust to SSI headers and 2 inlet muffler (check local smog rules) there isnt a whole lot you can do for horsepower besides cams and carbs without rebuilding the engine (or transplant ![]() weight reduction and suspension & brake mods are far more cost-effective enjoy the new toy! safety is absolutely the first place to start
- put new rubber brake hoses on it; flush and refill with a quality brake fluid (Ate blue/amber is a good one) - the seat belts must be replaced periodically - I'd do that right away also - inspect rotors/runout/pads, etc. - change engine oil and gearbox fluid (Swepco 201 for all Porsche synchromesh tranny's) - next the suspension - probably need to replace every bit of rubber in it |
