Question SC questions

Hello!

A friend of mine is in the market for an SC. I didn't have much advice for him except the pop off valve, tensioner update and rubber centered clutch problems. Is there anything else to look for specific to the SC's? Was there any major differences between the model years? Is an 83 a much improved car over a 78?

Thanks!
BK

I have an 80 and I was wondering what you meant by the "rubber centered clutch problems"???? I am not aware of this.

Donald,

According to the Porsche Bible, the SC's had a rubber centered clutch that was prone to failure. A piece of rubber would lodge itself between the clutch and pressure plate and cause the clutch to cease operating. All rubber centered clutches should be replaced with spring centered clutches. Now, this is from the performance handbook. I have no actual experience with this.

For US cars, the 80-83 SC's had K-lambda CIS with O2 sensor and lambda controller, and also steel fuel lines. I think there were also some changes to how the cold start injectors worked. The fuel distributors had some improvements too.

I can't say that the K-lambda was an improvement, as it seems a lot of people disconnect their O2 sensor anyway.

I have a '78sc. I think the '83 must be the one to go for.

My car has the updates you mention plus the Carrera valve covers, updated sump plate, and updated oil pressure spring sets. You might inquire about these if you are looking an an earlier model.

I believe the later SCs are better (of course I do). The main advantage of the earlier ones is the larger intake ports, which are better if you're gonna put the 3.2 liter P&Cs on, with cams, Webers, etc. Some advantages of the later ones are:

steel cold start ports inside the air box, steel fuel lines, turbo valve covers. According the the paperwork, the clutch disk in my car failed withint the first year of its life. I'd be VERY surprized if there are any SCs out there with the rubber centered disk still inside.
