Whale tail

Has anyone come across a whale tail that looks like this? It looks like it has a coating that has worn off??? Any ideas how I can clean it up and make it look more uniform?

Thanks in advance.
Rick

By the way. The darker portion is shiny and is slightly raised about the dull finish. It almost looks like someone painted it.

It almost appears that someone possibly had it clearcoated. Maybe at the same time if the car was repainted. Have you checked, just what is the color of the material that is coming off?. It appears that it would be a gloss black or clearcoat.

It really does look like clear coat. It used to be really popular over here to make the engine compartments all shiny by using a clear coat called 'Motor Lack' - I think even Würth used to offer the cr@p. Looked good for about a week (if you're into real shiny hoses and such), then like your rubber lip for the rest of the car's life. I've still got it all over the engine in my Range Rover. I can almost guarantee that it's going to be a PITA to remove. Additionally, you've got no areas to experiment with.

I'd try mechanical removal first: flexing to release the paint's hold on the rubber and picking the flakes off. If this is too tedious or does not lead to satisfactory results, I'd try brake fluid on the least visible area you can find. Brake fluid removes paint and we used brake fluid to 'revitalize' aged weatherstripping on older 911's, but I don't know what sort of finish you'll get on a larger surface.

Good luck.

Brake fluid will some time help out on natural rubber products, but does not have much effect on the newer synth. rubber compounds. I don't know if I would try it on the lip, my luck the damn thing would melt down and drip off the lip on to the paint. It almost looks like someone has been scratching all over with something already, fingernail, scrub brush, etc. First determine what the crap is, black paint or a clear coating of some sort. Then, you can plan a course of attack. Good luck!! Tony.

A little steel wool and some elbow grease, followed by some silicone spray ought to clean that up nice.

Thanks guys. Lot's of good thoughts. I will see if I can find a hidden area and do a little experimenting. I will let you all know what I find.
