This is how very well organized people track their project cost

How it's done

My rule of thumb when estimating the cost beforehand is to do a list like that, covering every last nut and bolt, total the $ then double it!

Not me, I destroy all the evidence. Don't want anything that can be used against me at a later date.

I have used Quicken to track my personal expenses since Version 1. Once back in the early 90's I ran a report on how much I was spending on Pizza. I have not run that report since. It was way more information than I wanted to know. If I vow to never ever run the report on car expenses. I bet is over one hundred dollars per year

Some years ago, my builder had a '34 Ford hotrod build. Brand new everything, including Corvettee running gear and suspension.

He went to insure it, the agent asked how much he had in it. He sez, not sure, I think about 100K, but I have all the receipts in a shoe box. Agent sez, "bring the box down" I'll total them up. Bottom line $237,000........Ouch

I put costs for Parts / Tools / Labor in different columns. Rarely are there charges for labor. I don't record p/n's and often put a group of related parts together (e.g. O-ring, flange seals, nuts & washers for trans. case as 1 item).

A few years ago, while my spouse was doing our taxes, she asked, "What to know how much that racecar cost us last year?".

I said, "No.". and thought, - I guess now not a good time to talk about all of the ATM withdrawls.

I don't want to know. Wife keeps me within our means, and otherwise knowing how much it costs might hamper my enjoyment ... if I ever sell it, the next guy can add it all up.

Password protect your spreadsheet.

I mean it.

And yes, the numbers are pretty sobering when you add them up.

oh my gosh, no way am I ever going to do this, just to achieve a total cost number. Why??

If I were to do it, I'd use a relational database like File Maker Pro (which I do use for work on stuff like this) so that you can come up with job cost number for separate items like engine, body, axle assembly etc etc.

I'm trying to bury the memory of the amount I spent on things like my steering wheel, seat covers, shifter, last year's tires, an on and on....
