I am having trouble nailing down a problem on my 88 3.2 w/ 100k. Here are the symptoms:
1. After cold start runs perfect for 2-3 mins then runs poorly till partly warmed up then runs fine. 2. After fully warm, at stops idle will drop 100,200, 300 rpms then stay at 800 for 20 seconds or so and cycle again. So far replaced plug wires, plugs, cap/rotor and tighted intake runners (ex #3) Next will replace 02 sens, DME Relay, & fuel filter. Am I on the right track or could it be the cyl. temp sensor? TIA and I'll let everyone know if this fixes anything. Sincerely, Buck 88 3.2 |

Buck,
I expect that the head temp sensor is the first thing youi should check, and if it is the old single-wire version ... replace it! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I understand the 3.2s are notorious for poor cold-running and warm-ups.
I would change out the DME relay, you should carry a spare anyway, I do. I had my head-temp sensor updated, per my mechanic. I noticed it reared it's ugly head only when my motor got warm. Update it anyway! I would also check/replace O2. I have also heard of others cleaning the ISV and this solved some idle hunt problems. Can you tell if it's running rich during these episodes?

Yes, but a CO meter on it - upgrade the temp sensor, and maybe check the fuel pressure to make sure that its even.
Nine times out of ten, there are electrical problems causing these things. Also check the timing and see if the computer is way off when its running rough. Could be a sign that one of the sensors is giving a bad signal... -Wayne |

Just in case anyone's having similar problems...it appears to have been the DME Relay. I replaced it this weekend and the car now runs great. I mistakenly thought a bad DME Relay would affect the car in all driving conditions...that does not appear to be the case. Also, I "think" I have the old temp sensor so I should change that next. Thanks for the help.
