Fan belt problem on my 2.7L

So I got myself a 1977 Porsche 911S and I have been slowly working on it but I ran into a problem about 20 minutes ago. I was putting in the fan belt and it seemed a little loose even with all 6 shims on the inside. I read that it was normal to get about half an inch of play in the center and that is what I was getting, so I started her up. After a few minutes and a few revs I had the fan belt come off and do the usual flip inside out. Before it happened I could hear the belt squealing a little. As well I am not sure if it matters but I received the can with no air condition parts and I did not put any in. Could that have changed the size of the belt that I need? I am using the 725mm belt.

If I understand you correctly, you have installed all 6 shims behind the fan pulley. if that is correct, you have adjusted it to it's loosest position. Try 3 behind and 3 in front (Not sure what you mean by inside exactly) and see if it tightens up.

regards,

al

Roy - the info above is spot on. The more shims you put in, the looser your belt will be because they open the space up in the pulley. Also, not all belts are created equal. The brand new belt I put on my car was actually longer than the worn out one I took off. The old belt had 4 shims used and was well adjusted but the new one is quite adamant about having just two shims used.

Obviously the balance of the shims are placed on the outside of the pulley, they'll never be misplaced there.
