Cool Pelican Gathering in KC area Thursday 5/8/08?

How about a Pelican Gathering in KC area Thursday 5/8/08?

I’m driving from Denver to my son’s graduation in Fulton, MO and will spend the night of May 8 in the Kansas City area. My plan is to get there mid-afternoon. It would be a fun excuse for a Pelican get-together.

Who? Anyone interested in Porsche.
What? Just a social gathering and Dutch dinner.
When? Afternoon/evening 5/8/08.
Where? Close to I-70 and motels. Someone’s Porsche shop?
Why? Fun and camaraderie.

Best,
Grady

I would love to join in but I am engaged up the road at Cooper Nuclear station until the 10th. Safe travel and Godspeed.

We plan to get to the KC area Thursday afternoon the 8th (5/8/08).
It would be fun to meet at a Porsche shop for a while, find a local bar/restaurant for a party/Pelican gathering and we need a close motel. Closer to I-70 is better but down I-35 and other is doable. I have friends in Raymore, MO (sorta 58 & 291) and we can stay there if necessary.

Best,
Grady

Plenty of places on I-70 in Independence out by the sports complex. Nice places around the mall at 291 also.

Finding a place to sleep is not so much an issue.

I would like to host a Pelican Gathering and possibly meeting at a Porsche shop.

I realize the PCA region has an event to the south this weekend. I don’t want to interfere with any of that. I want to have a general Porsche gathering on Thursday afternoon/evening. No big deal – just a bunch of Porsche nuts getting together.

Please help me find the best place and circumstance.

Best,
Grady

Dang, wish I were a little bit closer...

There are some guys there though that call themselves thje KC Wrenching Society or something like that. I hear they are a good bunch of guys. Maybe you already know of them. I think some of them are here on Pelican... one of that group has a shop there IIRC.

Grady, I'd be interested in a get together if we can round some folks up. I've got two neighbor's with older 911's that don't frequent the board much, so I'll email them and see what we can come up with.

We're all mid-town on the Kansas side, just South of I-70 about 10 miles.

Bob Hindson racing is right downtown. I'll put the word out and see if they'd be interested.

Shane,

My son Chris may try a horse barn job in Shelbyville, KY.
That may get me back to Louisville, my hometown.
I'm also trying to get Chris an internship in UK (Sussex).
Lots happening.

Best,
Grady

I would be interested in getting out on Thursday and meeting Grady! If Retro can coordinate Hindson, that would be excellent. If not, maybe Kaspar's Imagine Auto. Either way, I'll try to coordinate my calendar in order to make this get together!

*** Update ***

I just spoke with Grady and he is just outside Topeka...should be arriving in KC in an hour or so. We talked about a get together in the Legends area, as he will be trying to locate a place to stay in that vicinity. If anyone can make it out, Grady and I will be there enjoying an early dinner and Porsche talk. Please make an effort to come out if you can. PM me for details.

We had a great time at the Granite City Brewery. Grady and Rahelio (sp?) are two high quality individuals. I had Grady all to myself and got to hear expanded details on famous stories like the provenanced tractor trailer, 914 vs Ferrari, Rubbermade solution, and other classics from the master himself. I also got a rare and detailed look into Grady's Porsche racing and business history, which are truly fascinating. This man has seen it all when it comes to Porsche, and has some very special experiences that are only best related in a person-to-person environment like we had last night.

One aside that rang close to home for me....my '70E with 2.4S (2.7RS spec) motor was originally a Colorado car. I lived there and bought it in Colorado Springs in 1998. I began telling Grady the story and the PPI and mentioned that I saw some paperwork in my documentation that came with the car that mentioned my 2.4S was converted to 2.7RS by a man by the name of Dave Brown in Colorado. What does Grady say to that?...."yeah, Dave worked for me"!! Grady then went on to describe how they created this first class engine building area inside his large shop, complete with custom metal tables/shelves that rolled engines on and off of engine stands, dyno room with huge fans, and on and on. Great visuals created by the man - Grady Clay.

This was truly a special opportunity, and I would encourage anyone who has the chance to sit down and listen to Porsche history from Grady Clay - it would be a wise and enjoyable investment of your time. Just know going in, that after about 4 glasses of White Zin for Grady, the stories get even better!

Thank you Grady and Rahelio for a very enjoyable evening.

JA
